How tough are the 550E motors? Are they problematic in any way?

I can pick up a neat 04 with 3500km on for not much money...

Main bearings. They are solid engines if the spilt case is aligned properly. Check the manual on this site!!

After riding one, I fell in love with the character of the '550. I'm going to get one in the next couple of years.

If one is not averse to learning to do moderately deep work on the motor, in order to reduce stress on the main bearings, would it make sense to:
- Remove the counterbalancer to save overall weight? Or lighten it?
- Lighten the crank / rod / piston?
- Bore out bearing seats and install bigger main bearings?

Thanks in advance for any information. I'm just starting the journey. Inspired of course by the incredibly interesting work of UHE members!

Beautiful! Thanks.

I've been searching around to see if there's any existing work on lightening the reciprocating assembly in the 550. I did find that Thumper Racing do a 585cc stroker crank that is also lighter than stock. Stock power seems perfect - in the interest of reliability and parts reuse, is there any sense in working with the stock stuff and lightening it? Is this even a thing that is possible to do?

(Will read the ebooks you recommended btw! Must be something on this kind of stuff in there?)

hi Anthon

ive lightened my 80mm crank a bit with a grinder its really not hard to do

BUT the 550 crank is different and there is very little material in the center section so it might not like being cut up too much.

it is a full circle crank though and i think you could remove about 1kg total ... 500gms would be easy

there are a huge amount of pictures in the RFS section of KTMtalk of lightened cranks and it shows some of the problems that can arise from some of the cranks that are a bit thin in the middle.

the TR crank ... where is that? its for the ktm engine isn't it? if so im not sure it would work.. be nice if it did though.

Excellent, thanks, this will also help in finding further information.

Re. the Thumper Racing crank - we have a high-powered espresso machine at work. I sometimes like to drink the coffee from it and go read too fast. This is what I found: http://thumperracing.net/index.php?rout ... duct_id=57 ... on re-reading it seems to indeed be for KTM's. It's highlighted in the navigation bar under Husaberg, but all headline/text indicates KTM. The 550 they refer to seems to be a TR kit for the 525. So we can close that avenue of inquiry I think.

well maybe the RFS crank can be used with some small modifications to the engine or to the crank itself, you'd need to get hold of an rfs crank to find out

if the crank only needs changing a small amount you could have a billet one made through TR
