had this trouble before so when i came to my first bike with a lose gear on the woodruffe key i had no hesitation in using an old cure.

holding a long peice of lockwire, feed the wire to the side of the woodruffe key and then get the gear on and started. then tap the gear down the woodruffe key and at the same time its sliding past the wire. at the end use a carpenters chisel to 'chip' the excess off.

watch for the wire trying to go with the gear and doubling up at the back (shoulder) area on the crank.

if your wire is just a tidge too thick: run it across the face of the bench grinder for a slight 'D' profile.

No chance of the small bit of wire becoming dislodged at some point?

not with a nut on it eric. i don't fancy it's chances do you? LOL!!

What is so special about the 550? They all share the same parts!

You need to revisit the pub again to get your head on straight taffy, that piece

of wire will do nothing for holding gear, loctight is the answer silly! However if

to sloppy from having been run with loose nut then replace woodfuff key & gear!

I hate to see larger problems caused from an easy peasy fix :D

cheers boss!

the 550 crank nut has been coming undone and causing a bit of trouble, australia mainly. they pick on the aussies coz they were all sent down there as prisoners and it turned into a bloody holiday!!!!

. i have a 650 coming in next week with a snapped end to the crank right there.

the gear has no wear or burring and neither has the woodruffe key so the loctite did its stuff.

i can't recall whether i taught myself this one or whether i was passed ift by my late father and the 'lads' in the workshop. i started racing in 1980 as a 19 year old so its a long while now but i think i'd have been taught that one. i can't see what your resistance to it is mate?

the gear had to be tapped on which is just what you want isn't it?

everyone to his own....

any more cheek from the back of the class and i'm going to phone you up and talk for 12 hours w/o a break ya hear!!!!

Taffy
