Hi guys,

Just subscribed this forum, basically to know more about Husaberg. I'm currently riding a VOR 503 model 2001, which is doing very well, no problems, I like the bike, but it has also some downsides, no electrical starter, which is sometimes a problem on narrow steep "trials" were we suffer often crashes and the unavoidable problems all 4 strokes have after laying bottom up, and secondly, the factory is not in it's best financial situation. Therefore, I was looking for a similar bike, not japanese nor KTM and automatically one comes to Husaberg.
What stroke me is that the concept of both brands is very similar.
I have been offered a 2001 501 FE is absolute mint condition, some 650 miles used. I would like to know if their are any special things one should have in mind. The area I ride is one of an enormous variety, narrow and very steep and twisty paths with rocks, lose stones and roots of trees, hard dry paths with gravel and stones, mud, rivers we have to cross and also sand (dry river beds through the mountains). Top speed is not important (not Baja kind of use)
I need a bike which is a good nimble climber, with nice bottom torque and good traction. Something I have with the VOR but without the e-starter  Is the 501 FE such a bike?
Thanks for your help

The 501 is a gem of a bike and you will be right at home on it getting of your 530. Should have much more responsive power and sharper handling. Only problem is that the 2001 model was first of the new motor and had quite a few teething problems and is the one year/model I personally wouldnt recomend unless you know its a good one. The main problem was faliure of the strating gears. 2002-2003 essentially the same but much more reliable. 2004 onwards new ignitions & carbies better again except for the dimiss of the 501 which was replaced by 450 & 550 models. I have had a 2000 model FE501E & a 2003 FE501E, both have been fantastic with the only problem in 6 years being a failed SEM ignition on the 2003 model, othrwise flawless.

Cheers Horto

I'd go along with Horto, the 501 is a superb bike, loads of power without being fierce. I have a 2001 501 and the bike is currently without any of the electric starting gear. The bike had never fired up on the starter so I took it off as it was offending me ! A mate has a 2004 501 with the new ignition and Keihin carb, I'd say the bike is no better to ride but the reliability of starting is in a different league.

Check if rockers have been upgraded to ´03. The aluminum cam gear also caused some problems in the ´01 and ´02:s. The upgrade is steel.
Another weak spot was the kick shafts that sheared off. Ask if the upgraded shaft is installed.
Overall it seems that in terms of normal wear, the top end takes the most.
The counterbalancer bearings also need to be considered. Mine lasted 150 hrs, but some have failed much earlier and some with catastrophic results. An upgraded version is available with dual bearings, but it will cost you.

There are tons of smaller upgrades that can be done to these (see Taffy´s Owners Doc. Left side menu "The Doc"), and if you are thinking of doing all you can to perfect your bike, it will get expensive. You would then be better off looking at a ´03 or newer. But if you can live with some imperfections you will find this bike to be really sweet.
The purchase price should be rather much less than a ´03 to reflect the most needed upgrades if they haven´t been done already.

Good luck!

Thank you guys, it is good to see a forum were people like their bikes, but are still objective enough to also explain the downsides! Great.
As the bike offered is mint (completely as new from the shop) but not really cheap either and has none of the up grades (it has hardly been used), I will look around for a younger model.
Thanks a lot
