Hi All

I need some help, I have bought a 2002 501 fe, and it wont start on the electric start, hot or cold.
It cranks the engine over once or twice and then the starter motor kicks out an spins on its own, I have put a jump pack on it to see if its the battery, but it still does the same!

I also have a hard time starting it on the kick, It has a lovely spark and ive cleaned the carb.
any advice?

Check your valves and decomp for proper setting, check stator with ohm meter just to be sure it's good

I have the same bike as you. I recently went through this and fixed it by doing the following:

- Stator rewound by Sparks at UK Motoplat (member here). Provides stronger spark at lower cranking RPM.
- Yuasa YTZ7S battery
- Yamaha R6 starter
- shimmed the torque limiter for the starter
- replaced the Sprague
- added better starter cables
- keep the battery on a Battery Tender always
- Trail Tech regulator

It wasn't cheap, but it starts right up without pulling the decomp lever.

Hi - search all posts by me (arkley123) been struggling with an 02 501fe for 18months. Now sorted - finally replaced the stator - easy job. Leading upto that you must do valves - new carb needle & atomiser plus pilot jet and carb clean - decent battery as above. I've also had the Taffy crescent mod & the new auto decomp dutch clog. It's now brilliant - kick or button real easy. (I dont have a decomp lever).

I'm no mechanic and everyones comments / advice scared me previously- but actually once you've got into it / follow the book & doc and ask here, it's actually quite straight forward.
