I'm thinking about a new bike
1) Aprilia Futura sport touring bike
2) 300 XCW
3) Husaberg 450 or 550
4) nothing

Just in case I go insane, would you recommend a Husaberg 450 or 550?

Me - 50, 210 + gear, C+ level rider. When I fall it is more often due to going too slow (trying to grunt up a rock for example) then it is going too fast.

terrain - Rocky Mounts of Colorado, from 8,000 feet to 13,000, which means very substantial loss in horsepower compared to sea level, trail vary from smooth dirt to very rocky. Trail are pretty open, particularly compared to back East.

We have a local Husaberg dealer, Gunnison Motorsports. The owner, Fritz Kadlec, was a big ISDE start in the 80s and is a good guy. Based on what I've told him (and the couple of times he's seen me ride) he somewhat recommends the 550 as a good trail bike, though he personally rides a 450 and says he's faster on it. Going fast isn't ever going to be an issue for me!

Thanks.

Get the 550. The 450 and 550 feel the same for handling, the 550 power will make you laugh out loud when you ride.

Fritz isn't steering you wrong, go with the 550, spectacular is what it is..

and Fritz would be fast on anything, we just let him think the 450 does it for him :)

I weigh 200 without gear, ride in gunnison county on a '06 450. All things being equal, except engine i'd go with a 550. Must say though, i feel my 450 rips, just try to get me to sell it!!!!not! fritz is great dealer by the way!! he'll steer you straight!! :D

you may have noticed that fritz is an anorexic little weasel who must weigh 114 lbs, lol.

i'm only 165, but i bought a 550 because my riding style is to use more torque and laziness and less revviness, plus i figured the bigger motor that was revved less would wear a bit better.

RE: Re: 450 or 550?

the 450 is pretty darn fast and nimble in the woods, the FE550e is sweet, but I chose the 450 becasue I had a husky TE 510 and I know the smile power of a 500cc+ size bike but I also learned on my FE450 that for me , I tend to shy away from that 500+ power in tighter woods while on my 450, I am not shy and dance thru the woods quciker then I did on my 510 or would I on the 550 I am sure of that.

I would go with the 550. I cant believe how easy it is to ride. Just put it in 3rd gear and ride all day.

In my opinion, the 450 would suit your riding better than the 550. HOWEVER, at your altitude, my guess is the 550 would suit you best. You can't go wrong either way.

I'ld recommend the 550. My brother and I both have 550s and always smile when riding them, they are EXTREME fun. Sure they have too much power for tight woods, and we would be quicker on 450s, but once the trail opens up... so does the throttle and fun factor. We talk about getting 450s next and always say we would miss the thrill factor only cubes can provide.

Well I have the 450 (07) and I love it. I rode in Moab with NO issues at all other then getting beat in a drag by a little girl (120lbs) on a CRF 450. I am glad I got the 450, it suits my normal riding (tightwoods) better then a larger bore bike, It works super well for me. Meet Fritz in Moab, nice OLD gent!!! Just playing MR Kadlec, not to mention he does show up here once in a while...
