Unfortunately they are a consumable, however I suspect that the end float that they come with when new may contribute to their early demise. When I replaced my 98 501 followers and damaged cam I was particularly carefull to get the end float right, can't remember OTTMH what it is, and I now have nearly twice the hours on stock replacement followers than the originals with no signs of any problems to date. The new valve gear also coincided with a chage to Delo 400 from Mobil 1 4t which may also help.

If your mechanic is just pressing them in without checking and setting the end float properly then this may be the problem.

Later, 2003+?, followers are a different diameter and they do not seem to have the same problems. A retrofit is straightforward, possibly only involving the drilling of some holes. I'm sure that there is info in the doc about all this, check it out, link to the left.

And before someone else jumps in, its a good idea to edit your profile with your location and bike. Helps with answers.

i would change the conical valve springs that your 600 has , with double springs from lets say a 1998.
conical are very hard on the valve gear generally.

to have knocked out three is bad!

oil quality....
tappet clearances? what can happen is that if the float in the rocker left to right is allowed to float it culd mean any clearance! they need about 5 thou axially. always leave the two end screw loose, tap the end black cap screws in and then pinch up.

also look for cupped pads (if that model has them) and look at the inside shoulders of the rocker arms. the needles *** out the sidewalls and then trip the next needle around. you know the ruts in a bog that bikes make with each bloke making it deeper until one bloke gets stuck.....well that's what happens. stick a file to each inside shoulder.

thanks for the info, will be repairing this week.i suppose about every 10 hrs was my valve adj. checked them before this ride started. i will check for side play and yes i did'nt tap in pins before snuggin, will do that this time.the first owner took very good care of 600 when he had it ,but only logged 600 miles of ridin time.it now has 6900 miles and only trouble has been this rocker problem.
thanks again,

6900 miles! My 501 is at about 32,000 km and the valve gear work mentioned above was at about 10,000 km. Also when I mentioned end float above I should have been a bit more explicit as we have end float for the rockers on the rocker shafts as Taff mentions and also the end float of the follower bearings themselves. If these are too tight, then lube is compromised, too loose and the pins move around and '****' a bit resulting in premature wear.
