Hi Guys,
Pete from New Zealand here
First post to the forum, so be gentle.
Picked up a 570 last month, after a long succession of WR450's and even a Husky 430 Auto at one stage.
It was EU spec, so had to strip off all the ADR rubbish
Love the 570. Much better and easier to ride than the FE450. (for me)
Mainly ride Cross Country events and some MX, though slowing up a bit at 52
Back to the topic of my post.
We had a major MX meeting yesterday at Woodville in NZ.
There is an event called the 'River race'. Basically a shortened lap of the MX track with approx 500m up the middle of a 10m wide stream, with water depths ranging from 300mm to 600mm.
The bike ran well considering I was in 3rd gear mostly, with a wall of water coming over the bike.
On the MX part of the circuit, there was obviously water coming through the filter, as it would stutter at times.
One time coming up to a table top jump, it coughed on the approach, and nearly put me over the bars.
After each race, I pulled the filter, and there was approx 1/2 a cup of water around the O2 sensor, and the cylinder head breather hole.
The Oil in the sight glass was milky, and didn't look nice when I changed it last night.
It's obvious to me that the water was going down the breather hose and getting into the motor.
While I love the Berg, it seems that the filter housing could be better designed. With an outlet/valve to get rid of excess water. As it is, any water around the filter, can't go anywhere except through the filter and into the engine.
Any thoughts from the experts out there?
Is it feasible to block off the Breather pipe short term??
Maybe it could be removed for these sort of events and the hole used as a drain (with suitable filtering?)
Any ideas would be welcome.
PS: Paul Whibley (of GNCC fame) was in the same race, and his YZ 450 died at the start of the water in both races.
Not many can say they put 5 laps on the Axeman
I'll put a pic on from the race when I get a chance. Bikes are invisible behind a wall of water
Cheers
Pete
