Hello everybody,
I don't like the side stand, the way it flicks back when the load is taken off it, on two occasions my bike nearly fell over, after people checking the bike out, having a sit then jumping off and letting go of the bike only to have it move forward and almost fall over.
I realise it is a safety thing so I if you ride off with the stand down it will not dig in and spit you off.
So having said that, some people may think my solution is a bad idea.
So this is just a suggestion.

Solution: Remove the M8 countersunk Torx screw re-cut the thread the full length of the screw then cut about 8MM off the end and refit the screw using loctite, but without the cute little "duvalacky".
The stand will now not flick up by itself.
Just remember to kick up your stand when you ride off.

Thankyou Steve

Hmmm....The US bikes don't have that feature, at least not mine. My 06 has it and I miss not having it on the 09. I may have to look into the "duvalacky".

The stand on my 08 FS650 does the same thing & I'm constantly careful when my little tacker is in the shed as he's knocked it off the stand once already. My 07 FE550 has the same setup but with constant use it no longer flicks back up when the weight is taken off the bike. I guess everyone in the berg factory knows about it & it's of little concern in the design of the bike. Each to their own but if you cant remember to lift the stand before you ride off, you'll only do it a couple of times before you come a cropper.

You could try grinding the mounting plate welded to the frame a little to give it slightly more forward position which would stop it dis-engaging when the weight was taken off the stand. Just my opinion though.

my 2009 450 also flicks back, but only to the point (halfway) where you still have som support when leaning the bike sideways, but also enough to fully flick back whe riding off while forgetting to put it back yourself.

perfect!

My understanding is that manufacturers have 2 choices, autoretracting stands, or electrical interlocks, the objective being that you can't ride off with the stand down. Parking them in gear is easy and means they generally won't roll off the stand.

The stand on my 501 has, with wear like Wal's, become non auto retracting. If you grind bit off them such that they go forward a bit more so the spring over centres you can get the same result.

Dunno about the 09s, but older models have a very fragile standand I'd suggest never sitting on the bike with the stand down. I also like to use my hand to control their raise rather than let the spring flick them up. Less damage/wear this way. When they wear in this direction the sidestand foot can contact the swingarm on full travel. I have even seen grooves cut in swingarms when this was allowed to continue.

My 09 450 has the same flick back action but only to the point where if you lift the
off the stand it (not knowing about the safety feature of the flick back), its goes back just to the point where it has a high probability of falling over but not enough to warrent not kicking up all the way yourself ( though thats always been my habit).
I wouldnt say its a bad thing but i am definately thinking of it when someone else if checking out my bike

zeus
I'm a new aussie too!
hey to all

I have noticed in the parts box during pre-delivery some have come with a new mount bolt for the stand that does away with the collar, the spring etc. rests against to make it return when pressure is lifted off the stand. So there is a genuine bolt available to have your stand stay down until you kick it out of the way.
Best Regards
Sutto
ps. Like steve mentions NEVER EVER site on your bike whilst on the stand it is only to hold up your bike.

Thats right, the shorter bolt was in my spares bag. I thought it was a spare sprocket bolt then I noticed it was different to the others.

Hey SMCS thanks for helping sort out my LHRB issues a couple of weeks ago(I was one of those annoying phone calls). Good to see a dealer interested enough in their products to get on these forums and help out.
