Hi, if i replace my muffler with an aftermarket item should i disconnect the battery for 15sec to reset the ECU module?

I wouldn't think so.

Just do the 15 minute burn in procedure. In case you don't know what that is.

Put your bike on a center stand.
Set up a box fan to blow on the rads and engine to keep it cool.
Start the bike and let it idle for 15 minutes.
Do not touch the throttle during this period, this is very important.
You're done, the computer will have readjusted itself during this period

The age of computer electronics, if only jetting was that easy!!!.

Might be fitting a wide band Lamba sensor and gauge to my 04 550 shortly, that should interesting.
I think some body on here has already done this but can't remember who.

Regards

Sparks.

Should the new model Bergs also be able to do 'the burn proceedure' on the fly i.e. as you're riding it, it will adjust as nessasary??

Yes, it will adjust as you ride, that's the point of a closed loop system. However, it is recommended by the Tech's that if you make a significant change in the conditions from the last time the bike was started, they suggest doing the 15 min burn in.

My KTM mech friend was telling about watching the 690 during the burn in on his lap top while the bike was running. You can watch the on board computer raising and lower the idle on either side of the target rpm, and you can hear it as well. Once it finishes the adjustment after 10 minutes, it uses the next 5 minutes to verify all of the parameters. It will just take a lot longer if you are riding it and varying the throttle and loading.

So, changing the exhaust from the stock system to say a non restricted system will affect the a/f ratio as compared to the stock muffler.

Thanks Dale - just as I thought!

My FE450 feels great everywhere. I'm sure when my dealer fitted the Akro from new they did this burn in proceedure.

This may be a silly question but how does the computer know from 15min idling how much the fuel requirements have changed for the various load and throttle variations with the new exhaust. You would think with modern processing speeds it could work out idle parameters quicker than 15min.
