Hi guys,

just doing my first valve check and ran into a possible issue...

Basically, i couldn't get the feeler gauge under the pad? and valve, but i believe part of my problem was the feeler gauges i'm using are just to 'wide'. Looking @ the pic below, that feeler looks to be much more 'narrow' than the ones i'm using (sorry no way to take a pic of mine atm).

But it seems like my gauge is so wide that it's bigger than the pad itself, does this matter?

I had a friend help, and he said the tolerance was ok, but i wanna be sure and able to do this myself.

The area under the pad, seems a bit concave, like a bowl, and the wide gauge can't get 'into' this bowl.

But maybe i'm thinking about this wrong... in the below picture, say if you had a gauge as wide as the valve spring itself, that was .012mm thickness. Should you be able to get this super wide gauge between the pad and the valve?

So either the gauges we were using are causing us issues, or the valves are just to tight and and I need to readjust.

I've since found this thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13104#p110229 and will look into doing the 1/6th turn method, but still wondering about the gauges...

If you think that is hard, you should try to do it in the older ones !!

To check if they are concave you have to take it out and see, if yes change

Just put it on Tdc (comp stroke - if you don't know if it is just check if you have some axial play) unscrew it and make your own adjustment.
Gauges are the best method.
Get some practice on that, you should check it regularly.

FWIW, I and many others loike the 1/6 turn method. Find TDC, undo the lock nut, turn the tappet screw until it lightly seats, back off i/6 tuen, which is 1 nut flat, and tighten. Easy, quick to do and relaible and allows for concave wear.

Numerous post here on UHE about it over the years.
