My 2008 FE 550 has a T-stat and bypass hose which obviously helps in a faster warm up. The owners manual does not show this set up nor does it include it in the general description of the cooling system. The parts manual does show it as available.

My question is, do I need this thing? My 02 650 didn't have it and it warmed up just fine. My only reason to remove it is to get rid of some potentially useless parts and to simplify the system.

Thanks.

My 650 has one. Now at 240 hrs and no issues.

More stable operating temps means reduced engine wear. How much less? No idea.

I would leave it there, stable operating temps, better coolings system efficiency, less likely for cylinder to become out of round, less wear on all engine parts, fuel economy may be increase slightly by having it depending how you drive it from better fuel atomization of hot engine, i would definatly leave it there, i spent a significant amount of money and time testing and researching to add one, usually if they fail it will become open and just be like there isnt one any way,i drive a lot at 55-60 mph and coolant temps never got over 100F even if it was 80F outside, you could live without it if you decided to remove it you probably wouldnt notice any changes, the newer bikes all have them, every rocket bike has one, all other manufactuer dual sport bikes and alot of off road bikes have them, most all new atv's have them, all autos and diesels have them, if it wasnt important in an engine system no one would have them....you will probably get a lot of conflicting answers on this topic i have read a lot of posts about removing them and guys recomending to remove them if you did some searching on the topic you will know what i mean...

Some models of KTM XC and SX have no thermostats, other models EXC and XC-W do

I have changed both of my xc-w 's 200 and 300 to no thermostat and engine ice no boil overs

I would say in the cooler climates it would make sense to have them

I make two variations of the non thermostat hose assys for the Ducati models and we see a drop of 28/42 lower engine coolant temp.

I dont sell many std hose assys as mst customers want to reduce the coolnt temp and purchase the Race version

The MTS race kit was on the winning PIkes Peak bike the won in Colorado last year , we hope to see another win this year...
