I knew it wasn't a good idea to let the sidestand flip up unassisted. I made a pretty good effort to guide it up most of the time. Yesterday I just stood the bike up, it came up and didn't sound right. Broke the weld almost clean off. It's gonna get welded up, so not too big a deal. I have never sat on the bike with the stand down. It broke from snapping back on it's own one too many times.

You've been warned!

Oh that sucks! I always wonder, each time I put mine down, if it is going to manage to hold the bike up...weird angle to it.....

I had that happen on my '96 FE501 when it was fairly new (less than a year old). After it had been welded back up it never gave me any problems for the 6 or 7 years I owned it after that. One thing that might help is to tighten the pivot bolt up a bit so that it has a bit of friction to slow the kickstand down as it comes up.
