Hi, 2nd post....
Just bought my first 'Berg. Always wanted one..!!!!
Found this bike with 16 hours on it. It's like new....so I Did it.
Any advice on keeping this thing..!!! Big 4- strokes are my thing...Had an ATK, Many XR's, a Husky and even a Yamaha..(it was painful)...
I'll post pix as soon as I put it back together. As soon as I got home with it...it's gotta come apart to get cleaned and greased...right??... I'm re-jetting it too.. Going up to maybe a 42 or 45 and gonna raise the needle...ITS LEAN !!! I think the Main is fine.
Hope to see you all around sometime..

should be a good bike, obviously 6 years old...gotta be careful! suggest you check how many clickers are left on the cam chain - I'm sure you know how to check that don't you. cam chain is usual. set the tappets, change the oil and ride.

as for lean, they aren't lean, they're rich!

we jet them down to 35PJ with a commensurate drop in PA as well. main jet is too rich as well.

regards

It's only got 16 hours on it. I wouldn't even bother checking cam chain wear or tensioner adjustment but then, we're not all motorheads like you Taff.
Change the oil and RIDE!!!

mmmmm! true, true but my record is 8 hours and eating through the cases on the Millard's engine.

Taffy

WOW.... Guess I'll check the cam chain....Just for the hell of it..
I would assume that you put the engine at TDC and pull the whole adjuster out??... How about a quick and dirty lesson...or a connection to a good link here..
Thanks for the replies fellas.

Cheeseberger (Colby) replaced a cam chain on one of his high hour Husabergs, I think it was on his '04. I think his only made it 500 hours or so.

I'll second Logjump. Change the oil and ride the bike.

remove the 10mm head nut first and take the spring out, then take out the two 8mm bolts and remove the tensioner pull the shaft and count the clicks, reset the shaft by pressing the spring loaded locker and pushing the shaft back, re install into the motor with the two 8mm bolts and put the spring back in last.

as for lean, they aren't lean, they're rich!

I concur with the too lean idea - my '05 FE550 came from the factory with a OBDVT needle (clip in the #5 position) which got lowered (richened) to the #6, then replaced with a OBDVR needle #6 clip (made a substantial improvement), and finally switched to a NCVR needle (Yamaha part) with the clip in the #5 position. I have tried various pilot jets and have the best starting and off-idle transition with a 48 or 50 (stock is a 38) and the fuel screw about 3 turns out (manual lists 1-1/2 turns). My bike is hard to start, has poor throttle response, and a bad lean back-fire upon deceleration with the OEM jetting. BTW, I haven't touched the main jet.

Thanks for the advice fellas. Just for sport, I'm gonna check the chain...and as far as the jetting, I did already change the clip...moved it down 3 to the #5 position from the top, and the Pilot is changed from a 38 to a 42...might have to go even further, but the Yammie dealer near me didn't have the 45 I wanted...so we'll try this. They had NO IDEA how to find jets for an FCR... just the Yammie numbers is all they knew... What happened to people that REALLY know working at the shop..???...
I am going to start with the Fuel screw at 1 and 3/4...wish me luck.
I'll try to post a pix tomorrow morning of my progress...

Ok fellas...
I was at the Friendly KTM dealer today sending off my kids '01 125 SX cylinder to get re-plated at powerseal... He turned me on to a guy...who had a couple partial JD jet kits laying around. I have everything except the spacer for the accel pump...
Which needle...red or blue.....what clip position, and any other ideas??.. I'm hoping this, and some advice from ya'll will cure the screaming hot (red hot on the choke!!) head pipe issue that I have. I think it is coming from the slide height..??..
You fellas have no idea how thankful I am that this forum exists....BELIEVE IT !!!
Thanks again. Clutch47

Rich idle mixture will turn the pipe red just as fast. Anyway, surely you are not judging how you are jetted by how hot the header pipe gets when it is just sitting there idling in your garage. All four strokes, even those that are jetted perfectly, will turn the header pipe red hot when it is just sitting there running. Solution--go ride it, and do your jet testing that way. There are pages and pages of jetting threads here on this site. You can read for days.

I am pretty sure JD designed his kits to work as a complete unit. If it was me, I'd search and find the jetting thread Buzzard started (many years ago) about his adapted Honda jetting (works really good) or spend the bread on one of Taffy's turn key kits. There is not much of a database on JD's stuff here. There's options that will work a lot better on your Husaberg.
