Can anyone tell me what's the standard gearing on a 2005 FE 550 and also what's works the best for green leaning.

Thanks
Brookester

15/50 was sent to us in Australia in the box with the bike, fitted to the bike was 16/45 as we have some stupid rules out here 16/45 was used in the decibel test for our noise pollution laws, we would change out the gearing when we predelivered the bike and use the 15/50. depends where your from and wher you ride.

I like a 14-48 for tighter stuff and a 15-48 for the more open stuff with the occasional short stretches of tarmac.

we used a 15t front with a bigger rear sprocket 51 or 52 when required to achieve a 3.4 ratio, (14-48) i found that using the smaller 14t the chain cuts into the front chainslider and wears it out quicker as it pulls down tighter on it with the smaller sprocket. KTM s did the same thing if you ran a 13 on the front.

Good point. My bike came with the 48 rear and since I am as cheap as I am lazy I just opt to change the front sprocket out :D

Interesting....

I believe the '99 and earlier FE400 and FE350 came stock with a 13T front - but that was a different frame. It seems like I tried a 13T on my '96 FE501 that I had leftover from my Husqvarna days but on the 501 really wasn't needed. I did run a 14T most of the time as I really had no need of going 100 mph and did a lot of tight trail riding. I do use a 14T on my current 550 most of the time.

yeh i forgot to add if you stretch the life of the chain slider too far and head out for a ride in the mud the chain will actually start chopping into the front of the swingarm with the 14, if you fit a larger rear always remember to relocate the bolt in the rear chain guide to the screw hole for maximum clearance or you will create excessive wear on the rubber guide at the rear.
The drawback by changing the rear sprocket is more bolts to remove and you may need a spare chain cut to the desired lenght for hassle free changeovers. a spare wheel can help here as well.
