I've replaced the rings on my 2004 FE450, and after starting, the bike seems to be vibrating and feeling more lumpy than before.

I split the engine from the right hand side, and didn't touch the left (clutch side) at all, leaving the covers in place. I found I could lift the crank slightly, just enough to maneuver the cylinder liner out, and remove the piston.

On rebuilding, I checked, and triple checked the timing before fitting the timing chain, then cranked the engine a few times with the kick starter to check that the timing was still lined up before I went any further.

I presumed (lol), that as I hadn't touched the left side, that the balance shaft timing marks, shouldn't need checking. But I am thinking that, where I lifted the crank slightly, I may have moved it a tooth or two.

So before I go stripping anything down again, I'd really appreciate any thoughts on this. I know I can check myself by locking the engine and taking the left cover off, which I think I'll end up doing anyway.

in order to checx the timing of the balancer, you will need to pull the gear from the crank or the idler or pull the clutch, position the cam at tdc and realalign the dots on the gears. i don't thinx anybody has the patience to rotate the engine long enough to catch the original alignment.

So, if I take off the left case, remove either the crank or idler gear, I can rotate the engine without the balance shaft rotating? So I can line it up properly if needed. I don't need to split the engine? I appreciate your reply.

Hi,

No, you don't need to split cases again.
Take left cover of, try to rotate everything with clutch basket so that you can see if dots on balancer and crank gear are corected aligned.
If they are not aligned maybe it's easier to take clutch down than balancer or crank gear, becouse you need to heat them for putting back again.
I was doing this once, and I pul the clutch down.

Do you know the correct alingment of dots on gears?

Got it sorted, ended up splitting the cases and indeed the balance weight wasn't lined up. My bad, didn't check it properly the first time.
