Hi guys,
Just chasing some info on service intervals for my 2004 fe 450.i changed oil and filter as soon as i got the bike and again after 500klm.after the 500klm there was i very small amount of glitter on the magnetic plug and in the cylinderical screen and the oil was a bit glittery with a small amount of alloy shaving in the bottom of the oil drain pan.although within that 500klm worth of riding i had issues with the kickstart mechanism coming out and gouging the engine case and the little sledge plate on 2 seperate occasions.(all fixed now with all new parts)so presuming that is where the alloy has come from as when i fixed that i just layed the bike over to work on.have now got 150klm since that last oil change and wondering is it worth doing oil change now??oil stil looks good and clean from what i can see in the sight glass.im using motul 10w40 synthetic oil.i was going to do oil every 250klm and filter every 500klm.not extreme motor cross riding just casual cruising in the bush and about 4 klm of bitumen each way to get to the trails from home.hope all the info helps some one give me an answer

check your cam chain tension? if you remove the front header pipes and then the centre section. then undo the middle bolt of the three, this contains the spring for tensioning so be careful with it!

then unbolt the mechanism and remove. it could be that your at the end of the tensioner and the chain is therefore gouging out the wall.

they introduced a new CCT blade in 2005 and this means the tensioner would start at click 1 rather than 8 so that's good but is also means that the tensioner gets fully used up on the 2004s easily and the chain starts flapping about taking alloy out of the water jacket wall.

get the later blade, a new camchain (from me!) with a split link and then your safe. it also means that WHEN (and you will....) you have the head off, you just unclip the split link.

regards

Taffy

Had the cam chain tensioner out yesterday and still has about 4 or 5 clicks until fully extended so i presume its still ok???will be dropping the oil after next ride which will be around 230klm since last service.so will see if theres any glitter in the oil but im hoping its just from when i had the issue with the kickstarter gouging the case.

Sounds fine to me regarding the tensioner. Your probably right with the shavings bit, although hopefully the stuff on the magnetic plug is from the sledge plate (ferrous metal) as it's certainly not alloy.

Have you ever checked your crank end float? Easy to do, just remove the stator cover and try to move the crank in and out. Should feel a bit of movement.

Na havnt checked it as yet, probably something to check when i do next service i spose.it was absolute minimal the stuff on the mag plug so im not really concerned just thought id ask the question
