just got a 470 fc. and its a bugger to start .i have noticed that my friend as a Decompression lever which comes off the handlebar.on his and i haven't got one on mine i have the cable which comes from then rear of the kickstart and thats working then i kick it over just wondered if that would make any difference..also i have notice that it smokes alittle thought that it might of been over filled with oil so i dumped oil and put new in it and its still the same.....also on side of the carb where you can adjust the tickover just below it and forward alittle there is another screw. now im thinking thats this is air fuel mix. if so mine is screwed all the way in ...is it very hard to change piston rings. i know the engine as to be split to do it but does it all have to come apart to do it . like gear box out ect. as anyone got a repair manual for a 470 fc 2002 is there one i could download or something like carb settings rocker settings just the normal things to see if things need adjusting . also where is the best place to get this top decompresion cable. im in the uk
cheers

where in the UK?

if you have a reservior you should have the mounting point for the cable. at the other end there is a screw on the head and the decomp arm should lookm like a 'set square'. is this what you have?

yes the screw is a mixture screw, adjust both this and the idle screw to get best tickover but be warned-the bike should actually be set for best response as the bike will often hesitate if set for tickover in the yard.

check the breather hose for smoke or oil or fuel fumes. this will feed straight up into the frame. have a look in the frame for lots of residue.

you have to strip the engine to it's last nut i'm afraid to do the rings....

'the doc' is for bikes from '02 as mine is an '02 400 so i have a similar bike. it would piss me off but i would still strip the engine and re-new everything in there. did the old owner not give any indication when it was last rebuilt etc?

again the doc will help with this.

go to downloads and get yourself the service manual from '03. it's better than the actual '02 one, and there is little difference in the bikes.

go to 'private messages' i've left my number there for you.

hi ya taffy.
im from worcestershire. and i have noticed that the oil breather doesn't go into the frame its got a pipe going along the frame down to the swinging arm . also i have noticed that there is a noise comming from where the clutch is . my mates 470 as it as well but not as bad . so it could be a bearing or something ... yes the decompession thinggy is there and i can see where it goes but as i said the cable isn't on . do i really need that one on anyway ???.. going to take the carb off today and take it all apart and give it a good clean . my mates 470 kicks second kick . just wish this would lol also i will check the valve clearance to see if they are to tight . i will take a note of what jets are in there to see if they are the right ones .
cheers taffy

if it kicks over easy enough i perhaps wouldn't bother. as you'll note from the doc - the decompression lobe wears away and some folk have put the later lobe in instead. there's lots of info in the doc.

by 5 years old the emulsion tube and needle are getting worn out. i would consider renewing these.

i borrowed a 470 last year for a race from gary grover and the fuel had been in the carb so long that it has blocked the choke jet for good.

taffy ...
thanks for all the help you have given me over the past day . i have rebuilt the carb and did notice alittle ware like you said but it wasn't that much
i have re set the valves and checked the wires and now it starts 2nd kick from cold and 3rd may be forth kick sometimes when its warm.it still smokes alittle but i don't think that nothing to worry about. anyway thanks again for all your help

ps i left the air mix as it was because it didn't like it when i adjusted it so as you said that accounts for the ware

my pleasure spudulica!

at least you've told us how you got on.... so many don't. please consider replacing those carb parts sometime and then when you've fitted them take into account the choke and the change in note of the engine. just as we discussed.

regards

Taffy

PS. i am 'avin' a ***!!!
