Hello All,
While I am searching and reading through the forums I thought I would toss this out to you. My Cousin is trying to sell me his 02 650 - other than the igniton and valve train what else should be considered with this bike? And can the weak parts be upgraded to newer stuff? What is a fair price for this bike (it has 1000 miles or less on it)?

I am currently riding KTM 525, replaced a 99 TE610 Husky - I have been missing my power big time since the switch. And having ridden with my Cousin on the 'berg I know it is fast :evil: So please give me your thoughts or point me to good posts etc....

1) Rockers
2) updated steel cam gear
3) upgraded timing chain and updated tensioner
4) updated main bearings

Thats all I did to my 02 FC550 and had real good luck with it.
You may consider a Lineaweaver X2 cam as well.
 
As for Price, 1000 miles and in good condition, $2000 at most...it is an 02 even if he is family...

I like the sound of the $2000, at that price I could prob keep the KTM :idea: :wink:
 
You most likely run into resistance when you mention the 2k to your cousin, it would be a hard pill to swallow but that would be a fair price.

for people who like these bikes that is a steal... even if you have to do some updating, but 99% of the population would never consider buying an 02 or younger berg just because of the issues with the ignition, topend, bottomend bearings, and starter. if you can get your head around those things and make the needed modifications you will have a screaming bike for the money...

the bike would sit on cycle trader for months with out a nibble if he tried to sell it for more than 2500 unless the updating had been done but even then it takes the right perosn looking for it... and they are hard to come by.
 
Any estimates and shop recommendations for the SF Bay Area (Ca)?

I do want to know a bit more about what I am getting into.....
 
THE preeminent source for Husaberg work in the Bay Area would be Dale Lineaweaver at Lineaweaver racing. Not only does he have years of experience, but actually was instrumental in helping Husaberg develop some of the "upgrades" found on current models. He is as they say, "The Man" when it comes to 'Bergs.
 
Dale is an excellent source, He is busy but likes to talk berg! another great source for discussions is Boss (rick bozarth) he is not local and is very busy also, but a phone call to ask about those 02's is well worth it. he has performed a number of 02 updates... for parts local to you, and another great resource (one of my favorites) give Dan at Motoxotica a call.

not to sound sarcastic... but you are reading one of the best resources out there... try the DOC and read read read this website. all of the info you need to make a wise decesion is here...

Just FYI

I owned an 02, and I sold it to get into an newer model. the new ignition, carb and the increased longevity are well worth the extra cash in my opinion. D&H in Modesto has a new 04 FE650 on the floor. he may be willing to deal now... he has an 04' fe450, fe550, fe650 and a fc550 as well as a motard 650 that have been sitting there for over two years...

If you tried really hard you may be able to get him under the 6k range...
 
Refreshing this - looking at this bike again :roll:

My cousin updated the bike (I need to get the complete list), sounds like the entire engine was upgraded - main bearings, new upper end with e-start/timing mods etc.....

Re reading the above posts - I still might have electrical issues to deal with....?


My main concern would be longevity and maintenance of the engine as I do not have time to tear it down every few months. What is the reality of this bike? It has always been a pain when starting but a blast to ride.... This last weekend is an example - very hot conditions with the new upper end made it difficult to keep running in choppy breaking conditions and landing from jumps. And then VERY difficult to start after. Could this be too lean jetting?

One more thing - the fork has a nasty clunk to it when bottomed out - is there a fix for this?


I know I am faster on the 525 for most of my riding but the 'Berg puts the permagrin on my face. I am drawn to this bike.
 
Add a stator rewind to your list of things to do. Should help with the starting, altough each bike seems to have it's own specific "starting drill". You might want to run through the carb settings and float adjustment as to the stalling issues. The idle needs to be about 1800rpm on that bike.

02 FE650

You have had some excellent advice here...I did have a 02 FE650e, and had starting issues...BUT... it was fun to ride and I loved the power, if you like power you won't be disappointed. Traded mine on a KTM 450EXC and was very pleased with the trade. But I recently picked up another berg to get back in this great family.

Sounds like the updates have been done for you, good luck in your decision.
 
Thanks to both of you! I love power, my KTM does everything I need and does it almost perfectly (I am an old school Husky guy, can't seem to get good performance out of KTM suspension). The 'Berg is like dating a stripper - exhilarating but issues all the time.

Orange librarian or yellow and blue stripper!

I've had my 02 650 for a year now and apart from a planned winter strip (to see what state it was in from the previous owners abuse) i've not had to tear it apart.
Most my offroad riding is done on slow, tight and slippery green lanes and the power is way over the top..... but on the road and with the supermoto wheels on its awesome.

Bin the Librarian and go with the Stripper, at least you can lock her in the garage when you need a rest!!
 
Updates:

* The bike ran well, nice cool weather to help with easy break-in.

* I need to pursue all the starting tips and tricks as it does not sound like the starting decompression things work. This is with a new Yuasa '7' battery.

* Had a problem of the bike not shifting - reading this post and will be tearing it down soon.
