How much tension should there be before assembling the side case. I put it straight on and it would not return. Do I need to make one revolution clockwise before assembly?
Thanks,
John

jmumme,

This exert was taken from the tread link at the bottom of the page. Taffy describes in detail on how to install the kickstart shaft in order to get the proper tension so that your kickstarter returns after a kick. I have done this once last september and it worked like a charm. I currently have my bike apart replacing the auto decomp lever and will be fitting it tomorrow and will have to do this procedure again. There are some pics in my gallery ( Kickstart shaft and auto decomp device ) if you care to look at any of the info in there. Hope this answers your questions.

you have a hook end to the spring and that is fed down into the gearbox hole and hooks around the case where it sharpens to a wedge of aluminium.

the other end has an obvious hole in the kickstart mechanism-out it in there. the keyhole shaped ratcheting piece of metal needs to be swung clockwise over the stopping plate until it is at the left end of the said plate.

now press it all down and let go. the keyhole piece will whip anti-clockwise and stop against the right-hand end of the plate which you'll note is raised slightly.

Thread on kickstart shaft fitment

you have a hook end to the spring and that is fed down into the gearbox hole and hooks around the case where it sharpens to a wedge of aluminium. THE PICTURE OF THE SPRING IN THE PARTS BOOK IS THE WRONG WAY AROUND.

the other end has an obvious hole in the kickstart mechanism Put it in there. PUT THE KICKSTART LEVER BACK ON FOR A MOMENT AND USE IT TO CRANK AROUND THE MECHANISM. the keyhole shaped ratcheting piece of metal needs to be swung clockwise over/PAST the stopping (CRESCENT) plate until it is at the left end of the said plate.

now press it all down and let go. the keyhole piece will whip BACK anti-clockwise and stop against the right-hand end of the CRESCENT plate which you'll note HAS A SHOULDER STOP. .

remove the kicklever and continue to fit all the other gubbins.

well done!

regards

Taffy

Just to clarify.
With the spring hooked and connected to the kick shaft the hole on the kick shaft when unprung is located at about 4 o'clock position. Then I crank it around and let go (hiting the stop plate) the same hole is now at 7 o'clock position. Giving about 1/4 turn of spring load.
Does that seem like the right amount of tension?
Thanks All..

got it! thanks
I put it together and then put the clutch on. It wouldn't move. I kicked a litte harder and it untuck? Then I rotated the start lever up to the top and it works great. Not sure why it was stuck hope I didn't damage anything..

Thanks again!
John

What's that clutch basket made of? it looks like titanium or something. Also, I was really amazed at how well these bikes are built. I think I'm one of Husabergs biggest fans!
