I spend most of my riding at the lower speeds in technical trails. I rarely see 5th and 6th gear and if i do i'm not pushing the bike hard.

i have seen 14/52 suggested. in my experience it seems that would be a bit tall.

I used to run a 12/50 on my xr.

what gear ratio would be good for technical terrain yet good on chain/ sprocket and keep it off the swingarm?

thx

I use 12/48 ratio most on lower speeds and technical trails. Just like you , it is fine for my.
No problems with chain/swingarm.

I use 14 x 51 and would have thought that that was undergeared. 14 x 50 was better once I got the handling sorted.

I decided to give a go at 14 52 after a test ride yesterday.

The new question does anything need to be changed such as the chain guide under the swingarm with the new proposed combo?

The bike has 13 48 now.

yes, you have two bolt holes in the dhain guard under the swing arm, you need to modify that to make the space. at 52 teeth you may find it best to file the guard etc spending a bit of time on it. on my bike with a 51T and all the effort the chain chewed right through the bottom some years later despite my best efforts!

I run 13 / 51 and find that I can pull 2nd gear in all but the most extreme climbs which help with traction. Taffys right about the chain guide; needs slight modification to clear a 50 or larger. 12 at the front seemed too low and wore out quicker. 14 was too high. I ride tight steep rocky and rooty forest trails.
