I have a side project to make my 2001 fx-650 start on the button someday. I have a gsxr 750 motor on it with upgraded battery also have a sparks rewound stator. It starts better than ever on kicker. when i try the e-start it does not engage anything, the starter spins real good though. My understanding is that 01 models did not have clutch or torque limter just the sprague can i replace inner part of sprague and expect any positive results?

afaik, the '01 has both the torque limiter and the starter sprague. if you are having problems with the starter not spinning the engine, the most likely suspect is the sprague. open up the case and while holding fingers on the ends of the limiter and the sprague shafts. tap the starter button very briefly to see which is slipping. i am not familiar with the model of the gsxr starter. hopefully it is a mitsuba sm-14.
and yes, the inner part of the sprague is a separate part.

Thanks for input. I have not removed side cover yet but when i do i will try that. I would like to only take cover off once. so should i replace sprague and shim torque limiter at same time?

The very early 01's did not have a torque limiter and when a backfire would occur during e-starting it caused some damage.

A warranty / updated e-start gear wheel was soon introduced which included a torque limiter.

Its possible someone had removed your original gear wheel as a precautionary measure and it was never replaced with the updated part.

Hi there,

Have been through all the suff my self and will recommend starting with your autodecomp device. Loads of posts on that in here.

If thats not working, something else in the "starting circuit" is gonna give up.

Read the poor stating guide in the docs,

Sorry if youve already been through all this
