My 2000 Fe started acting up lately. The bike starts fine, about 30 seconds later it starts snapping and popping badly and wont idle unless you crank up the idle to the point it is racing. after about 1-2 minutes the Left exhaust manifold starts turning red with heat (at which time I shut it down) I have cleaned the card thoroughly, put fresh gas in it and a new air filter. The choke acts normal, and is turning off as it is supposed to. I recently adjusted the valves (about 7 hours ago) that 7 hours ago also included a new exhaust side valve rocker arm, since the bearing decided to grenade. I had to ride the bike about 2 hours with the trashed rocker arm to get out of a secluded area in the Big Bend TX area. My self diagnosis of the problem is that the problem is either:

My compression hardware is stuck partially open.
The carb is still dirty.
I have a bent valve have a screwed up valve seat (Big Bend debacle).
Maybe the orange exhaust goop let go letting air in.

Anybody got any ideas?

Did this problem happen all at once? What does the plug look like and have you replaced it? How does your stator look(cracked, corroded)? The 400's are known for soft valve seats. It may be that time.

Lean fuel mixtures burn hot and incomplete. Remaining unburnt fuel will burn in the exhaust. Slow ignition timing will also cause unburnt fuel to burn in the exhaust. If a valve was bent, it wouldn't start easily. Sorry so general, but should lead you in the right direction.

would a damaged valve seat also make the bike hard to start? I replaced the spark plug during the last valve adjustment. I will pull the spark plug tonight, replace the sealant between the exhaust and the head and check for air leaks in the intake track. In the past I have checked for leaks by spraying WD40 around the intake areas and listening for an RPM rise. If you guys have a better way to check let me know.
How about the one hot exhaust. Somehow I think it might be a clue as to what is happening.

Oh yea, it did start acting up all of a sudden. I rode the bike and it ran perfect, then it sat for about a month. I started it after it sat and it ran like crap. I origionally thought that the gas went bad and clogged up the carb.

Dont forget to at least have a visual of the stator. Is there any chance the bike was stored below freezing?

wasnt stored below freezing. Live in TX and bike is in the garage. I pulled the header pipes off and did find all the goop is completely gone. My stator looks ok I guess???? I clean it out on a regular basis and make sure it is dry.

runs like

Hi Berniebc.
I think your initial feeling is correct, the carb is still dirty.Sounds to me like the pilot jet is partly blocked.Does it run a little better when the choke(enrichener) is on?

It does run better with the choke on actually. I will go throught the carb again this weekend. I will let you know how it turns out.

Make sure that all the small openings are open. There was one on one end at the bottom that is easy to over look on my bike.Take your time and use a bright light to see by.
