I'm considering a very low mileage 1998 FE501, but don't have any experience with Husabergs. I see you're a bunch of enthusiastic Husabergers  ; and would like your input...here's my situation:

I'm currently riding a KLR650 (which I like), but have been wanting a lighter bike for the technical off-road stuff, but still street legal with reasonable road manners. Up till now I've been looking at the KLX250s and DRZ400, but I really want more power. Also, I'm pretty busy, and tho' I like to wrench on my own bikes, I prefer to ride...so reliability is important, and I really don't want a high-maintenance bike....

What do you think? My real questions have to do with road manners, and reliablity/maintenance...cuz the off-road performance and power are clearly there!

Thanks in advance,
Brad

Edit: I found and looked at the Owner's Doc...still looking for your opinions. Also, I will not be motocrossing/racing...just commuting and trail riding, sometimes by myself (and yes, I know the dangers, but I lost my riding buddy and can't not ride...)

welcome. i too had your questions but i tell you what you get what you pay for in a berg. they do need some tlc from time to time and the pre 00's are getting hard to find OEM parts but there are a few guys on here that can get you anything you want and the price is really not that much more than what you pay for new bikes stuff anyway as for road conditions ive only been on the road once ill leagaly and she flew but a little scary as far as reliability the 97-99 motors are some of the best from what everyone says here and i personnaly havnt had any major issues (knock on wood)

The one I'm looking at says it has 162 miles on it and looks pristine...price is ~$2500. It's funny...too low a mileage, I'm worried about either fraud or storage; too high and I'm worried about if it's worn out.

Its been on E-Bay quite a few times. The photos were the ones taken in California by the previous owner I believe. The seller needs to be asked why is he using photos from the sale he apparantly purchased it from?

That's the one...I asked for contact info, and said I want to look at it...we'll see how he responds. Might be one of those ebay hijacks. We'll see...and I'm not in a hurry, if it smells fishy, then I'm not buying.

I baught some of the parts from him i too thought it was totally fishy i even checked him out online no problems i sent him the money and i got the parts i asked for pretty respectable guy i have his actual email if you want it

id buy the bike myself but i dont have 2500 to toss away plus the shipping wich is around $1200. i just checked on it

I fits in good nick and you do the maintenance, including Delo 400 every 5 hours they will do the job. 30 + 1000 km on my 98 501. Might be better of with a DRZ400 though based on what you have been riding and that you are not keen to do high frequency maintenance.

I have a 99 501 which I have owned since 01 that has been incredibly reliable as well.
The few parts I have needed I have always been able to find w/o any delays

I had a hard time starting it initially before I knew the secret hand shake to make her fire on first to third kick every time.
