1998 FE 400e

I haven't been riding my old 400 in the past couple years, but decided to bring it out of retirement. Took the carb in and had it cleaned. New air filters, oil, etc....

First ride in the mountains, it felt good, tho maybe a little down on power, but I was at over 7000ft. But, when I open it up, I noticed a little clatter on the top end. I generally dont ride in the upper throttle range, so I didn't worry about it.

My nephew took it out for a ride, no problems. Then on the 3rd ride, my brother-in-law was riding it, down a grade, and not revved too high, he said it made distinct "thunk" and it's locked up. motor wont turn at all.

I haven't had time to tear it down yet. And to me, it sounds like a top end, but I'm not sure, as I wasn't there. My main question is, where can I find parts for this bike for a reasonable price? Can I bolt on a KTM head?

Thanks.

It depends whats broken, everything is speculation till we know some more, at least pull the clutch cover and/or valve covers and you should find something, i know some ktm heads are very close but i think it would be an r&d experiment that hasnt been really tested yet that i know of....being as its probably not a straight bolt on it would probably add to the cost and/or maybe even not work right when done. check ebay, post wanted adds, taffy, rick bozarth from bossoffroad.com, even some part stores for generic bearings or seals, still need to know a little more to point you in the right direction....

I would think that that is top end. to pull the complete rocker cover will answer all your questions. could be anything but in 1998:

CFB jumping off the rocker arm
tappet nut jumping off
decomp stop jumping off
a ball coming out of the cam bearings

any of those 4 will lock the top end.

could go on and on but just strip the rocker box off and look

regards

Taffy
