I have an 18 inch rear on 2000 my fe600. A guy i work with has a 19 inch on his fc 470 he is willing to trade with me. I like the look of the 19 better and the tires are easy to come by. Is there any real differance between the two?
Thanks, Matt

The 18 is prefered for off road trail riding. It will spin slower in general for tight trails with less chance off a flame out and better chug along at slow speeds. I have both. The 19 is on my MX bike like most you will find. Great for quick exits out of turns. I use it off road also. I believe the 19 off road sharpens my abilities You have to clutch it more but for me it's a blast also. Most MXers with 19s have motors with a big hit also but the off road bikes with 18s typically have less of a hit for a different purpose.

Once mounted on the rim, both size tires are the exact same circumference. The only difference is that the 19 inch tire has a shorter side wall. This makes up the inch difference in diameter and makes the tires the same once mounted. The 19 inch tires are generally a bit lighter in weight than the same tire in an 18 inch size.

Some say that 19 inch tires are more prone to pinch flats. I've never noticed a difference. Other than that, most riders would be hard-pressed to tell ANY difference in how the tires handle. I sure can't, and I've ridden and raced for 15 years on both sizes.

Make your trade and don't worry about it, as long as the tires you want to use are available.

Less pressure

You can have less air pressure in an 18" beacuse the 18" have higher sidewalls and don`t puncture so easy as the 19" with same air pressure there are more grip in tricky tracks with lower air pressure, i would not change to a 19" rim on a enduro bike.

RE: Less pressure

I may have been outsmarted on this one. I thought I could tell difference. I believe jampe has the most correct answer. They must be an ultimate reason for the 18 on an enduro bike. Now isn't it also true that there are many differen tires with vaious sidewall heights? then you might be able to get the 19 to be a larger diameter right? It has felt like that to me in the tight trails at times with the 19 rear. I also agree that the 19 would not be a good replacement choice forthe 18. Go with what it's supposed to be stock.
