09 FE450 ongoing hard hot starting pbms

I'm still trying to solve the hard ( or no ) hot starting issues on this bike.

When fully warmed up, if I restart the bike within 60 secs, it starts fine. If I wait longer, it won't start and, after a few tries, will barely turn over. If I wait another 30 minutes till it cools down, it starts just fine, cranks quickly.

If I open the throttle while cranking, the starter bogs down, as if the decomp is not working. But that makes no sense. The decomp is a mechanical centrifugal device that has no connection with the starter or the throttle.

So I continue to be puzzled with this bike's behavior.

Anyone have similar issues and have solved them?

Hmmm. Looks like no one has ever had these issues.

However, I decided to check the valves, despite having done them about 100 hours ago ( 500 total on bike). The exhausts were OK. But the intakes were .25mm and .30mm (spec is .10 to .15).

Turns out the shims had worn into cups. Replaced them with good shims. Now the bike starts much better when hot. Still not great, but better.

Sorry, I missed this post first time 'round!

There have been some issues with hard starting and iirc there was an updated camshaft with a modified decompressor ... Have mostly seen that related to the 570s but it may apply to the 450 as well.

That 30 min cool down I had on my bike due to the small 10micron inline filter But you have a 09, unless you retro fitted one? But it doesnt sound like the same issue as you can restart within 60 sec, and I guess the engine is running good? And that turn over problem. Strange indeed.

What if a sensor is faulty or will an unadjusted TPS do anything? I'm thinking if the ignition timing/fuel will be wrong due to wrong ECU input? What happens if you remove the airfilter to give the sensor some cold air?

Honestly I have no clue whatsoever, just thinking out aloud as it is a strange behavior.

I agree with you that the auto decomp, which is mechanical, shouldnt be affected by temp. The only other thing I can think of bogging the start is wrong timing and fuel.

One thing though that is good to check on a bike like this is the battery terminals. I had a loose cable on one of the terminals. Gave strange results... All electronics you know... And the 09 batteries had weak terminals that broke easily.

As you see, no clue

But one must start somewhere. And I noticed when a person throw out bad ideas the more cunning people join in and correct with more valid ideas haha
