Hi, I had an 11 fe450 which I sold like a fool! Now need another berg but will be used for long off road trips of about 1500miles. 70% off road.
I like the classic looks of the old model and if I move quickly have found a mint one for sale. But I also need reliability as will be from home and engine issues would ruin the trip.
Experiences would be most appreciated.
Other possible is a TE300 as never had a two stroke before.
Thanks.

I have yet to buy a pre-09 "classic" 'Berg myself, but as I understand it, it could be a benefit if you are ready to do oil changes on the road. Might be overkill though. From what I have read, I would be prepared to try this, given that I have the opportunity and inclination to become mechanically familiar with the bike. Especially if it's a nice, clean bike that's a "known good" specimen. You can probably trust it - they were developed for increased reliability until very last production years - and then if you dig in, you can KNOW that you trust it. I would say.

Damn ... I have a soft spot for the '08s. Too bad! Keep us posted, whatever happens.

Just tore my 08 fe650 down after 270 hrs to replace the cam chain. If it hadn't been for the fact that the pistons eaten something and put a nice gouge in the liner, I could have easily gotten away with just replacing the cam chain. Valves were only slightly tuliping everything else inside looks great. Great motors.

I loved my 08 fe 450 is had the looks the power but starting it in the winter/fall was a challenge! But that was my first Berg and I do miss it!

you could work on the old model, any DIY mech could have a go. and nothing much ever went wrong. the LDCs suffer a malaise of small annoying problems none of which are the same on any bike.

If you get the 08 stick a set of 18mmTCs on it, DVSK, a stronger decomp spring, a starter repair kit, a jetting kit and ride for ever....... they are light as opposed to feeling light on the LDCs.

oddly enough the 450/570 LDCs like a 20mm offset as they are tiring to ride. anyone with both bikes should just swop their clamps like I did! :D :D

Taffy

Thanks for the replies, having missed out on a mint 08 I have decided to give a TE250 a go. Due for delivery in a week or so :)

Taffy, what model bike did you source the 18mm TCs from?

I THINK (and I'm not sure) that it was off a 250SX from a few years back?

the idea would be to get the part number right and then stick it in a parts search. it would be helpful if you can share the knowledge if you should find anything out? :D :D

regards

Thanks Taffy. Dumb question.... but do you mean get part no. of the TCs from a KTM parts website & then try them?

I'm in the process of swapping a set of ktm 18-20 adjustable offset on my 01. Mine came off a 525 smr. The ktm clamps have the offset stamped on them so they are easy to figure out. 17 dollar top tapered bearing from a local bearing supply and now waiting another week for the ktm top seal to arrive.

from memory I don't think the ktm seals fit

if you get stuck let me know I have some clark seals of almost the right dimensions
