I would like to add a Key or something similar to the ignition to disable the bike while parked.
I use this bike as a dual sport and leave the bike unattended and would like to be able to make it a little more
secure. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What about a hidden toggle switch that is tied into the ignition kill switch. Thieves may try to start it but it would not go. They would probably get discouraged and leave it thinking that the bike just won't go. You won't deter a hard core thief.

Compare the wiring diagram from -04 with the one you have for your bike and you will see what cables you can connect to. My guess is that even can use the ignition lock from -04. You have to fabricate a bracket for the lock but other than that it won't be that hard to incorporate a ignition lock.

Ignition lock 80011066000

I did it about 6 yrs ago The guy that I bought the bike from ( 04 FE450) gave me the wiring harness which included a keyed switch and a bracket to hold the switch and all the indicator lights I have no part #s I had to splice the keyed switch into the wiring harness Here are pictures and the wiring diagram

Note: With the key off if you push the start button the engine will still turn over but will not fire It will only fire when the key is turned on

FWIW my -04 FS was delivered with ignition key from the factory and it didn't turn over the engine with the key turned off.

I have a key with ignition from my spare 650, if your interested PM me.

If I'm parking it for a while out of eyesight, I clip a smallish padlock on the rear sprocket. In my garage, a huge padlock gets used.

You can lock your helmet with the same padlock aswell. It hangs upside down near, but just off the ground. My biggest worry is someone will spit in it.

I have a trip planned for Baja and I have never been so that is really the reason for the keyed switch.
Under normal conditions I would not be away from the bike. it may or may not help I don't know just trying to make myself feel better and trying to keep an honest person honest.

Use a disk lock! Any padlock/chain can be cut in 2 seconds. None of this stops someone lifting it into a van. Some aftermarket alarms are worth the time. They are getting better.

Thank you for the tip, I will look into that.

I got a 4 wire ignitioon switch like this with the rubbery cover on the key:

Plenty here cheap enough:

I then cut into the wire that feeds from the main fuse to the harness and put the switch in series with that. The 4 wire type switches have 2 circuits, one of them is off when the switch is off, and on when its on funnily enough. The other is the reverse, and this one you wire parallel to the kill switch. So when the key is on, the main power flows like normal to the harness and the kill switch is off, and turn the switch off, and it cuts the power, and connects the kill switch to kill the engine. Means they can't kick or bump start it. Works for me on my 07 650.

what did you use for a bracket? I have that same key and purchased the stock bracket off of a KTM 530 and it is way smaller than this key and now way to modify.

I made my own out of some scrap Al and attahed to the bike via a top bar clamp bolt. Also used shrink tube and self amalgamating tape to waterproof it and tidy up the wiring.

Hi Steve!

Do you have a real picture of the wiring? it's easy to install the wiring that cuts the ignition button away but I'm struggling with the wiring that cuts the spark off? The color of the wire would help a lot!
