I'm at a loss. My 07 won't start. Occasionally, after what feels like hours of kicking it, it will catch and run for 10-15 seconds with a slow 8 stroking idle.

Here's the back story. Bike was running fine, jetted to the doc specs. I replaced the stock fuel tank with a used boss tank. Did a valve check and was in spec. Then it stopped running. I haven't been able to ride it since, 12 months maybe.
Here's what I've done so far
Rechecked valves- several times
Replaced plug and plug boot, good spark
Replaced pilot jet, new
Checked for fuel supply to carb, present, fresh fuel
Soaked carb in carb cleaner
Adjusted fuel screw

Does anyone have any other suggestions?? The only positive thing is, now my left leg is twice as strong as my right....
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'll get back with miles and hours on the clock.

in the absence of any piston or valve train issues ... (cracked piston, valve spring broken, cam follower starting to go, burnt seats etc etc) and assuming the jetting is the same as when it was running....

wind the idle speed in a turn or 2 then if that doesn't help try winding it out

also try towing it

compression check ?

brand new fuel and new std plug would be a good idea as well

Exactly, bike fired idled rough, touched the throttle and died. Now won't fire. All after valve check and tank. I,m assuming it has nothing to do with the tank. I don't have access to a compression tester. Would those broken parts just appear?
I'll go mess with the idle screw, I think I wound it in a bunch. I'll go the other way

maybe you forgot that there is choke knob on the carb which must be used when engine is cold. and when its so cold outside (almost winter) it is good to try to set the idle mixture richer, maybe also to screw the limit screw in to secure the idle speed is a bit higher. did you also clean the acc pump? did you remove all jets and blew compressed air through all holes in the carb? also, check contacts, esp. ignition sensor.

someone on here once found a similar problem

they had just adjusted the valves correctly but then the engine would not start

one of the cam follower bearings was starting to fail and bind so the valve clearence was changing all the time

That does not sound very promising. I may have to bite the bullet and actually pay someone to look at it. Though it pains me greatly.
I did adjust the yellow screw out now that the col weather is upon us. But the issue was happening while temps were still comfortable

might be worth towing it behind a ute put the bike in 3rd or 4th, pull the decomp lever in for a bit and let it out then see if you can get some action

good idea as long as the throttle isn't stuck wide open. i ended up with a 650 because of that.

I wish I could say that it was some major issue, just so I wouldn't feel so dumb. The other night I sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner in there and let it sit. Drained it and checked the drain plug. It was full of nasty goo. Pulled the pilot again clean, replaced w my other spare. Pulled the main...completely filled with *****. Cleaned it readjusted everything and started kicking. I was just about to bin the whole bike and buy something brand new when it sputtered
I was over joyed and started kicking like a ******* when she fired up and ran like I we she could.
And the cherry on top was after she idled for a few minutes, I shut her down and just touched the 'lectric boot and fired right up!
Thank you all for your help in saving me $12000 on a new KTM

cheers

no need to be negative now. celebrate, enjoy that it was so easy. I understand your feelings, I was also anxious that my long term effort invested into my bike can turn useless at the end. but happily I cut off faulty head and replaced it by one without f**king invisible hole in it and everything is ok now. although the coolant boils over quickly, this puts me not down anymore, I know I have an old radiator cap and do not run the fan yet. new parts at home already. and after more than 7 months of riding abstinence my goon style unquestionably contributes to that unnecessary overheating. I can finally work on minor "problems" now, step by step, with no stress.

So what you are saying is pump gas was the culprit? Ever since the US government mandated 10 to 15 percent ethanol in pump gas, I have had several carbs clog up. There is a small gas station down the street from me that offers non ethanol fuel on one of their pumps. It costs more per gallon, but ever since I switched to non ethanol in everything I own that has a carb, I have been problem free. The ethanol is basically sugar alcohol. If it sits in a carb for any length of time the sugary alcohol will bond to rubber and metal parts in the carb eventually clogging it up.
