Hi guys, need a little advise, my friends just brought a 07 650 and it was fine until the battery went dead. put a new battery and still sounds as if shes not got enough grunt to turn the engine over at correct speeds to start, then new bat died.... its all most impossable to kick start, unless i do 3 slow kicks holding the manul de-comp then let go of it and give a mighty hard kick.... goly its a right b*tch to kickstart compaired to my 02 650, never even used my electric starter, just simply give it a nice hard kick with out the manul de-comp and it fires up. i cant even get the kick start to go fully down slowly with out the de-comp on his 07.... any ideas guys? whys the 07 eating the batterys and even not kickable? she goes good once started though :p little bit of a sqeek when you hit the starter, it trys then dies and you have to stop because you feel sorry for it....

Sounds like the auto decompression device failed. Pull the rocker cover off and have a look.

A suggestion...........Before pulling the rocker box off, take off the valve covers, set the motor at TDC on the compression stroke and check the valve lash.

I agree with Berger that the auto decompressor is gone awry, some how. Might just be a broken spring on the auto decompressor arm.

But checking the lash as you pull it apart will also tell part of the story. If the valves are hideously loose, it could just be that someone adjusted them on overlap, and there is excessive valve lash, so much so that the auto decompressor cannot open the exhausts during start up. If that is the case both the intakes AND the exhausts should be loose.

Let us know how you get on.

It was a broken spring, bludy thing! gave me a bruse on the bottom of my foot ill have to walk on for the whole week... so how does it work? when the starter starts turning the engine over the auto de comp opens the exhaust valves and when it fires up the auto decomp disengages? is it the same on the 02 model? i never use the decomp when im kicking mine 02, it doesnt need it, but the 07 defantly needed it. so what im trying to ask is, does my 02 starter get a helping hand from an auto decomp like the 07 or should i help it by holding the manual decomp with my finger until it fires up? doesnt really need it though, starter works fine just i read someone else doing something like that....????

Yes the 02 has it as well.

The spring holds the decomp in position to lift the exhausts slightly until the cam spins fast enough, and then the centrifugal force swings the metal bar attached to the decomp out, and disengages the decomp while it's running. Replace the spring and you'll be back in business.
