Hi everyone!

I own a '06 450, wich I bought new and she has now 950 km. I ocasionally race enduros but I ride in technical trails almost every weekend.

About three rides ago I noticed that my bike was overheating after a really difficult up hill, very slow and lots of trees´s roots, stones, holes, deep ruts and elevation changes. At the top of the hill, I stopped and while waiting for my friends (all in KTM) I saw coolant vapor coming up from the left side of the engine but when I got closer, couldn't see where the steam was coming out from and figured that the problem was a loose hose and thight them all.

The next ride, the same thing happend and lots of hot coolant and vapor was coming out near the joint of the hose and the water pump, but this time I saw all that hot coolant was coming from a very small hole between the water pump cover ant the engine case. The engine felt vey hot, you could notice the heat 4 inches away from the engine.

As soon as the engine cooled, I rode my bike home. But I block way from it, I stopped in a red light, in that moment, the engine died and after trying to start it many times with the electric starter, the battery died too!!, and almost 20 kicks later the bike started but the noise coming from the exhust was louder than normal and the engine funcioned really bad.

Am I in big trouble? What can I do to fix my bike? I really like it and want to keep it for a long time.

I am from Mexico, so my english is far from perfect, I hope yapu could understand me.

There are a few things to check as far as a Husaberg and its cooling system. First, make sure you only fill the coolant to just above the fins in the radiator. The coolant has to have room to expand, or it will overflow and give the appearance of overheating.

Next, make sure all the air is bled from the cooling system. There is a bleed screw on the top of the head. Crack it open until coolant starts to flow out, then re-tighten.

Last, the hole by the water pump has to do with the WP seal. When coolant is leaking out of this hole, the WP seal has failed. The hole is there to allow a path for the coolant to get out so it does not contaminate your oil. Overfilling the radiator can cause the seal to leak as well. It is easy to replace the seal, there have been several threads about the procedure here on this board. The WP seal is a weak feature on the new Husabegs, but it is only a minor problem.

Hi Homerburg,
Can you tell us a few things?
What is the outside temp and altitute in the area you ride and are having these problems.
Do you know if you have the original carb jets in your carb.
Try and find the source of the louder exhaust sound, is this noise coming from the engine, possibly a head gasket leak.
What fuel octane rating are you using?
Can you check the level of coolant in your radiator for us?
...thx

After you get the coolant leak repaired you may want to consider installing a cooling fan kit. It will be a necessity for riding technical trails in the late spring and summer months.

I know that this does not exactly follow the path of this thread, but I include this because it happened to my '06 450. The rubber carb intake boot rips right in front of the carb, letting in air, causing a lean condition. As the rip increases in size, the bike fails to run at lower revs, and is hard to start. Lots of backfiring goes on about this time. My local dealer has sold three intake boots in the last two weeks. If you have a ripped intake boot, the lean condition might be part of the overheating. By the way,the ripped boot had a pre-scored slice around the inside of the boot, where it ripped. The replacement boot does not.About a $12 part, such a bargain!

nsman,

I ride between 8,000 to 10,000 ft, and the average temperature in that area is between 75 and 85°F. This year is specially hot (global warming).

The noise was coming from the exhaust, cuoldn't notice if there was noise coming from the engine. After the boiling I added about 100 ml (maybe 4 oz) of water to the radiator. (not much really).

The fuel is 90 octane. Wich is the best you can find around my place.

Hope this helps.

Homerberg,
With a compression ratio at 13:1,on a fe450e , there is a definite possibility that fuel with an octane rating of 90 is just not enough. Can you remove your sparkplug and look at the firing tip area and try and describe what you see. Also can you look at the back of the cylinder head near where the carb attaches and see if the head gasket is broken...thanks.

I've been dealing with the same on my 04 for about a year now. I plan on installing an overflow tank under the right rear number plate and I've switched to Engine Ice, bleed the system repeatedly and followed some of the similar advice as above from the dealer I bought from. The next step I'm thinking about is two2cool in the oil. An 8oz bottle is $25 and they recommend 4 oz per oil change! I'm still stumped.

nsman,
I'll be back to you in a couple of days. I'm out of town and be back in 5 days so I can't take a look at my bike sooner than that.

k-dub,
the overflow tank is a great idea. My previous bike was a GasGas and those are equipped with the overflow tank, and it really works.

jwilly,
I will follow your advice and check the valves. I hope the problem is not there.

buzzard,
I´ll look into the intake boot. That issue ocurred to me with a bike I had before.

jhonf3,
I will follow your advice. BEfore this ride, I checked the coolant level, it was 10mm (maybe a litle less than 1/2") above the fins.

berger,
I have the fan installed, but It is disconected because in a previous race, the fan was not allowing the battery to recharge. Since then I installed a manual switch and the fan is always off.

Thanks everybody for your help. I realley apreciate it a lot. Thanks.

I'll do my homework and be back to you in a couple of days.

p.d. Everybody is welcome to ride in Mexico.

I started using Two2cool in the oil. I won't give it two thumbs up until the weather really starts to heat up in a month or two, but it does seem to run a bit cooler.

I'm avoiding Engine Ice, at least so far, based on comments from Lineweaver and certain others whose opinions command respect. Preventing boilovers is good, but reducing operating temps is the goal, and I believe I achieve that best with 70/30 water/coolant mix and a dash of Water Wetter. YMMV

check rubber seal on radiator cap, then head gasket

Hi all,

I want to thank everybody for your help on my problem. My FE now works fine. The problem was a loose jet in the carb.

Everybody is welcome to ride in México.

Thanks to all again.

Winter Force Ride in Mexico ? Anyone? Anyone????

You and your rich Honda riding bro Paying? You brining a clutch master rebuild kit this time? Oh yea and, a new package of JB Weld?

No, who needs a clutch, & No the motor is on it's way out of the bike and off to be welded. Jack A$$  :D

Now thats not nice. BE carefull, you might offend someone and get a nasty letter. HAHAHAHA.

Perhaps a Mod or the mighty Schwimster will give me a "yellow card" maybe even (shudder) a "red card".
