Hi all, havent been here for a while and i see the Docs are gone. i have a line on a low hrs 04 550 and was trying to find out about it.

it's got the steeper steering angle right?
jap ignition and FCR?
does the head/valves stay together....assuming you dont over rev it
any other major issues?

i vaguely remember crank bearing issues, but overall a good bike. i don't think the bearing issues are a given, u just need to look at side clearances, which would be easy enuff.

thanks

regarding the crank bearing failure, on average was it run hard, medium or easy?

I didn't bought it new, it was used and I didn't know the previous owner. I'm not sure how his riding style was.

Personally I've never run it hard, or even medium on the first weeks... I was too scared for that :p

It happened like a month or two after I bought it. It sounded good back then and suddenly began to sound like a boiling tractor.

Just going off memory, I think the '04 450 and 550 were good, but the 650's had the bearing issues that were remedied during the '05 year. '04 got Jap ignitions and FCR's. Tires rubbing the exhaust were fixed in '06, but that's pretty minor. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong?

regarding mains

short version

http://husaberg.org/mechanical/17170-definative-main-bearing-thread.html

long version http://husaberg.org/mechanical/5986-main-bearings-failure-must-change.html

some people have valve springs go at around 200 hrs, there is quite a choice of dual springs, I run kibblewhites.

http://husaberg.org/mechanical/10680-all-about-valve-springs-nice-pics.html

some people have the cam follower bearings go at 2-300hrs others get 500 hours out of them, the ktm part number for the follower bearing is 590 36 061 090 $22 from munn racing. if you replace them it is also worth flipping the main rocker pins upside down.

thanks very much, good info

while we're reminiscing....i have the idea that at some point husaberg changed the cams to be less steep in order to keep the valve train together longer....i have owned a 96 FC 501 and an 02 FC 470. i loved the 501 motor. the 470 is OK but doesn't really do it like the 501. will the 04 FE 550 pull as smoothly way down at low RPMs ......and as strong as the 96 FC501 ?

the mains don't go as a rule on the 550, however valve heads continue to drop off and wreck engines. I suggest that you go for the dual valve spring kit (I sell one) and if you ever have the head off: replace both exhaust valves as a precaution.

as a rule all they need is a modified decomp spring that is stronger
a starter repair kit to stop the starter system 'slipping'.

Hi there ,
initially one of the header pipes would come into a little contact with the front wheel when compressed on the 04 models. I think for memory in Australia they had a replacement header they gave out as it could of been looked at as a potential safety concern I guess. It didn't appear to interfere to much , just marked the header pipe at times under heavy compression from the front tyre.
For memory ,they stopped making that 04 header pipe.

Most of the bikes would have had them replaced by now I would say. The main bearing failures I think were from not setting the end float correctly from factory ,on a first few bikes, here in Aust from what I was told a number of years ago, they were pretty much fixed by checking the end floats I think before sending them out to dealers for the public.
And also on later bikes I would say.

Here in Aust they came out with magura EX handle bars , these had way to much sweep in them, I quickly replaced them with the SX bars which were much better.

Generally they were a good bike, I had 2 04 550 over the years.
Hope this helps some.
