Hi,

Today's not been so good, just blew out the head gasket on the 450 due to a suspected heat problem.
I had a problem with the 450 popping and backfiring on deceleration and an inability to set the idle low enough, thought i'd try adjusting the mixture PS on the carb while running before resorting to re-jetting.
After about 10 minutes (including warm up) of running the bike and adjusting, I experience a huge puff of steam and coolant bubbling from the head gasket seal on the right side. There was no liquid coming out of the overflow hose, though. I shut off immediately as this happened in fear of coolant finding it's way past the piston, but after the event I didn't find any in the oil while draining it.

I did think to myself that it seemed to be radiating a tonne of heat, but it always had.
The correct amount of coolant was in the radiator prior to starting.

I assume an improperly sealed head gasket would of been a contributing factor to the popping and backfire. What could be causing the excessive heat?

Cheers,
-Connor

You can slightly over torque the head and may help to stop a leak.
I dont know the spec right now but I had a small leak in the front on my 06 FE650.
Over torqued it slightly and it stopped it.
Im still good 40+ hours later.
