Ok I test rode the bike yesterday....I am in love....the bike is sooooo frickin sweet.

Now is time to put the brakes on.............

What should I look for on this bike? The seller is very straight forward and a very good guy, so I don't think he would try and pull something. The bike is very well riden. Forks have been serviced. Regular maintanence has been done. Bike rode fine, shifted well. Owner states that clutch is original and might need to be changed soon. Felt fine so I don't know. Any problem areas I should look at specifically?

Another question.....I want another set of wheels (1 dirt and 1 street). I am thinking SM setup. Will KTM wheels work, and if so what models? If I go with SM wheels, what options are available?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a grin from ear to ear for 3 hours after riding that bike.

Darrin, the 501 is a great bike, especially the 03 model. The 'doc' will provide tons of info for you, some may apply to older models, but you'll figure it all out. Having owned a couple 501s, there isn't much but a few key items to keep tabs on. Follow Taffy's ideas on foolproofing the ignition, agian outlined in the 'doc'. Sealing the moisture out of the stator itself and keeping the chamber dry are key in prolonging stator life. Good oil, Motul, Motorex, any highgrade synthetic motorcycle purpose built oil is important, change it frequently. check the valve adj often as its a 40 minute job.

oh, and keep the rubber side down

Hi Derrin,

I agree totally with you, it's a great bike! (I also own one) However, they do need good maintenance. How many hours did it run up till now? How many kilometers? Have a look at the maintenance schedule and see what's coming up. I just did a major overhaul at 250 hours, believe me; that's expensive.... For the rest; no problems.

Good luck!
