I have taken the plunge and bought a 2010 390. First impression is that there are some similarities to my old FE400 starting with riding position (high pegs). The "new" engine is way smoother and the throttle response (F.I.?) is way better. Also bike feels really nimble which is what the 70 degree motor was supposed to deliver.

Only one ride around the farm at this point but it looks good so far. Now I have to convince my wife that I should keep my 03 FE400. That way I would have an example of the last Berg built in Sweden and the last Berg that isn't a rebadged KTM.

I'll post some more when I get in a longer ride.

cheers

what an interesting topic!

mmmm?

what would have been interesting is for you too have developed your 400 all these years and then compare?

I have for instance on my old 400 got
2004 frame
18mm offset yokes/TCs
reworked forks
mx rear shock - re-worked
eccentric crankcase mounts for the swing arm

then the engine is very tuned with the keihin carb etc. no electric start but does have running taillight and headlamp etc.

I rode the 400 several years ago next to my 570 on the first day i got it at a MX track
the 400 and 570 handled about the same which given that it was the first day for the 570 and they always feel heavier - was a great result for the 570!
the 570 felt taller, I was ON the 570 and IN the 400.

the 570 now has 22mm offset, re-worked forks and rear shock, X-bushing for more rear squat.

interesting..... anyone else wanna share their views on riding the two bikes?

Taffy

You're right, my 03 is quite stock and I'm sure it could be improved upon. As it stands though the old girl has been an excellent bike that still holds up very well against more modern offerings.

What concerns me is that the tradition of Husaberg innovation seems to have come to an end. Lets not forget that KTM was a bit of a joke until they acquired Husaberg. When the 70 degree motor came out I was encouraged, it looked like KTM was allowing Husaberg to push the envelope. That all seems to have come to an end.

yes but you don't know what Husqvarna are going to hit the ground running with?

if it is standard fair then I'll agree with you.

Did my first long ride in Ganaraska forest on the FE390. One thing that I noticed, as with my FE400, is that the bars are too low for me. Luckily the bar risers I installed on my old FE400 fit the FE390. Problem solved.

Otherwise the bike was great. Easy to ride on the tightstuff - just put it in 2nd and ride with the throttle, and a rocket on the wide trails.

One other thing though, oil changes are a little more involved that the old bike and you have to deal with convoluted drain and filter placements. I'll get used to it.
