Bought an 03 FE400 in May 04. Love it...but yesterday I blew up on the trail. Lost power, loud clicking from the engine. Did I drop a valve? It starts, but I am worried about damage. About 25 hours on the engine. There are no Berg dealers in my state, and I do not consider myself experienced, so any advise is appreciated. 8O

Hi Sean,
You may have experienced a cam follower failure which is somewhat of a common occurence. Simply remove the rocker cover via the 6mm screws and have a look inside.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,
Dale

Hi,

have you done all maintenance (change of oil, valve clearances etc.) at the right time? Regular checking valve clearance is really important.
What do you mean by clicking? A ticking sound like a sewing machine or a rubbing and slipping?

greetings

FE400 engine issue

hribman,
yes, correct maintenance has been performed. It is a ticking sound somewhat like a sewing machine.

Dale, I took a look in there this afternoon, here's where my ignorance comes in...I do not see anything wrong. What should I be looking for?

sincerely,
Sean

Hi Sean,
Any perceptible radial movement and / or rough operation of the camshaft followers. (Rockerarm located wheels)
Best Regards,
Dale

it's the actual bearings that run on the cams on the end of the rocker arms that go. as dale says, give them a spin and they'll be rough. if they're good they don't spin infact-they feel like there are rubber seals dragging the wheels to a stop.

when knackered, they spin freely but roughly and as dale says there is radial movement.

here describes what the old bearings look like and what the new ones will look like.

FE400

Taffy,

thanks. I checked the cam followers (I even ordered new ones form
Dan at Motoexotica), however, after inspection, I realized the problem was in fact with the decompression hardware. I had recently installed a Scotts damper and re-routed my manual decompression cable. In that process I believe I managed to spoil the adjustment. I think I rode it for about 5 minutes that way, the valves seem fine.

thanks for all the help.

P.S. I grew up in Essex, my sister now lives in Ely...small world.

Found it

Well, after all that, it was the decompression system. I had to pull out most of the clutch side components to get to the kick start operated decompression lever. It had gouged a significant amount of metal out of the kick start shaft. I am not sure about the cause, but my theory is simply bad adjustment. I have swapped out the decompression lever for a button end bolt as per strings for Scully and Horto, leaving the auto decopression and the bar mounted manual lever. Hope that works.
While I was in there I decided to invest in a Rekluse clutch. I have high expectations based on the feedback I have read on this site.
