Hi Gents
I currently ride a Gasser EC250 but fancy getting a big 4 stroke for trail riding. Dave Clarke seems to be about the best place to get one, do I go for an 03 501 or spend an extra £1000 on a 04 450. Would spending the extra make life that much better? I'm ok with the spannering and don't mind a bit of fettling/tinkering. I don't want to end up with a money pit or something that leaves me stranded and if I go for the 03 I could keep the Gasser for racing but might have to sell it if I went for the 04. What do I listen/look out for when viewing?
Thanks!

I would go for the 04 450.
Kehin Carb and and kokusan ignition on 04.
The 03 has Dellorto Crab and SEM ignition that often has to be replaced.

Hey Goody,

Are we talking new or 2nd hand? I bought my 501 03 new and up to now it's proven to be really reliable exempt for the SEM ignition which I replaced once. I think this reliabillity is due to the fact that I don't try to save money on maintenance and do all maintenance according to the user manual. So if you buy one 2nd hand make sure the maintenance is done good and on time!
The 501 is a great bike for low revving trail riding! So the money you save on the 450 can be used on other essentials....

Both used, I was thinking that once set correctly the dellorto carb is OK and stators can go on any bike (I've just had the GasGas one rewound) can't the SEM ones be rewound for less money than buying a new one?

There is some good information posted in "The Doc" on the left hand margin. Some of it pertains to the SEM ignition.

take the 450. it's not the fact that it's one year diffeent. they made MASSIVE changes to ther bike to get to '04.

regards

Taffy
