Whats the general consesus on this model ?I understand the 01 and 02 engines had issues but 03 and some late 02 had the updated parts . Is there any way of checking this ?what else to check . Looking at buying this

it is known as the ratphuq engine. there's always something wrong. it is probably also the wildest husaberg ever made. very short stroke and wide bore. lubrication to the piston is the problem....

don't use it a s a road bike and always gear it for 5th and never for 6th gear. use 6th a a cruise gear that can't accelerate.

don't do this and you're looking at trouble.

they didn't make them in 2003. they made them in 2001-2002 and the Americans used to get them first. The USA importer went pop in 2002 and there was a lot of stock stuck there so it got shipped back to Sweden and to the UK and sold. so that exxplains 'our' 2003s.

the 10th digit of the frame number is the year of the model...of the model - and that is what you want to know OK?

it is clearly very low mileage and use because it is on the original deacals and seat cover as well as the funky front mudguard.

If I bought it I would do the following
later auto decomp and modified spring
later cam chain tensioner blade
sealed cam bearings
DVSK - softer dual valve springs as opposed to hard single springs
lower the compression by skimming the piston in a lathe
possibly the softer 01 cam in from the 400. make it smooth and torquey
re-jet the carb by a change of slide to a /50 and a comensurate PJ, smaller choke jet, good clean, check for a worn atomiser.
IXU24 Iridium plug from Dernso
kiskstart sledge mod
adjust the ignition timing to that discussed here at UHE
extra strong starter motor
starter repair kit
It probably hasn't even got a decent battery - you need a YTZ7S on it.

change the oil every two rides, set the tappets every other ride unless the DVSK are fitted.

Turn the 17mm nut on the rear shock (HSCD) to the maximum, LSCD and rebound then function normally.

have the forks rebuilt with over half the shims thrown away just to soften them up enough.

would I buy one? yes, I'd buy THAT one but not an old one! I'd then do all the easy stuff mentioned, visit the dentist f I didn't get the forks done.

you can still one way or another run these bikes no problem. you can even upgrade the clutch to a later non-sticky one.

Cheers for that . I respect and appreciate all those points .
What is UHE ?
What sort of comp ratio are we aiming for with the piston ? And whats the main reason for lowering comp ?it it just easier on everything and wont really notice the lower comp anyway ?

Cheers .

the engine is WILD!!!! so this is a way of taming it. I didn't mention it but the Keihin FCR carb mod you see often mentioned here really does aid control.

think coach and horses with loose reins and then with nice tight reins.

UHE is the name of this site. well it was but i noticed recently that we don't seem to have any name at all!

I'd just skim the piston down from a 3mm dome to 1.5-2mm. the correct way to do it is to measure the compression and do the maths.

I can do this for you if you get it. its a minutes work.

I've got to tell you fella, we have just got a Husaberg 470 starting on the button and you can't even hear it turning over, it just starts running.

that has restored my faith in them. it is about three years since I did one. we fitted a recon engine, did out the carb and now it starts straight away. took a kickstart arm to get it running though.....! ouch!

so maybe there is hope yet? we continue to find new ways of improving them. I'll pass it on as i learn these things.

one thing I did do was to ask Steven, my apprentice, to measure under the slide when it was happy to idle. stopped the bike and a 5.5mm drill bit slipped under easily (shank first) but the 6mm was a little too low but I'm sure that to rest a slide on a 6mm drill bit to start it for the first time would be an excellent way forwards.

Taffy
