Signed up tonight. Hi all. Just finding my way around the forum. Thanks for the useful posts on valve clearance.

Got a new 2008 FE 450 for £3900 + onroad costs. I'll try to attach a picture. Seemed like a good deal. This is the first offroad bike I've had for a long time so I don't need the latest machine. But being newish to offroad riding I preferred a new bike as I'm not sure I'd be able to spot a lemon.

Anything in particular that I should watch out for on this model?

I've just done my first service. Found the valve clearance adjustment difficult. Used the 1/6 turn and feeler gauge method as I wasn't so confident in what I was doing. Bike started fine and seems ok. What feeler gauge are you lot using? I couldn't get an offset 0.12 mm or 0.005 inch in time so I persevered with a standard 0.12 mm gauge. I've seen posts mentioning a porsche gauge but this appears to be .004 inch only? I'll try to attach a picture also of what I've found online. The standard gauge is difficult to use as there is very little room! Any advice on where to purchase a gauge to make the job easier?

Hopefully this only appears once (if at all) as I've tried a couple of times. Apologies if I've messed this up!

I use dial guages to set valve lash on engines where possible, it accounts for the possibility of error from cupping and rocker shaft wear

the turns method is very inconsistant

Its a bit fiddly setting up a dial guage and needs pactice but its very good there is a pic in my gallery
