Hi all,

In continuation to my last post about Chassis Numbers & Year Recognition, I also today found out that my bike actually is an FX model, whereas I was told when I bought it that it was a SUMO converted FE Model.

Looking at the old 2002 brochure in PDF, The ONLY differenc in specs are that the rearwheel was 10 mm slimmer on the FX and 0,5 Kg lighter total.

Did they really name the FX (Cross Country) with this little difference to the FE (Enduro), or is there more diffences not mentioned ?? If there is I would really like to know ! (Knowing your bike is a MUST)

Mine is re-built to SUMO with 3,5 & 5,0 Inch wheels, and 6 pot brake in front. The suspension is still the "tall" version", and that bothers me a bit. I there an easy fix to get the original FS suspension ??? Can you just change the spings out, or is there more to it than this ?? Again looking at the brochure, its only the weight, suspension travel and ride height thats different FS Vs. FE

Does anyone know the full story about the 3 models differences ?

afaik, the major mechanical difference between the fx and fe is the suspension . fx set up much stiffer throughout the range for high speed (desert type) racing. over the years, these could have been revalved as mine have.

And I might add,

The minor technical differences were that the FX did not come with lights like the FE.

To answer your question about the suspension. There is more to it that just changing springs. The components have to be "lowered", and then use the correct spring LENGTH as well as rate.

Thanks guys,

I like it stiff for road use so thats good, But would really like it lowered..... It sound like something or a professional though, and would probably set me back loada money !!! Unless theres somone with a "propor FS kit" for sale or for swap ??

Agree it could have been revalved at some point, same as somone added all the electrics and lights to it as well. But it is still too high !!

Anyone with more to add to the differences... ?? Don't hesitate :)

Well Husaden,
I am also not into SUMO but here are my thoughts . If I was in your
situation I might try increasing my race sag to from say 105 to 115 and
compensate by raising the forks 10 or so mm.
I don't know how much it's worth but could try.
Seems like it's at least a small quick fix and inexpensive.
It will only bring you down 1/2 inch (13 mm) but you might feel a little better.

Like Ned37 said major difference is the suspension:

Suspension front
FE model '02: WP MXMA 4860-HBG E ø 48 mm
FS model '02: WP MXMA 4860-HBG S ø 48 mm
FC & FX model '02: WP MXMA 4860-HBG MX ø 48 mm

Suspension rear
FE model '02: WP PDS 5018-HBG E
FS model '02: WP PDS 5018-HBG S
FC & FX model '02: PDS 5018-HBG MX

you might consider looking around for a used sumo suspension from a berg or a ktm and swap everything out. tuning an offroad suspension for street is really a lot of work i've seen forks and shocks sell for pretty cheap. watch the for sale section at supermotojunkie.com.

Thanks guys for your replys,

It's something I will consider some more...before attempting one of your solutions.. and I DONT like it to be pricy !!
