I'm taking the clutch basket off to replace the sprague. I've got to the point where you have to undo the nut. The manual says you have to use the special tool to hold the clutch. Is it possible to undo this nut with normal everyday tools?

You can make a cheap holding tool if youve got any old clutch plates kicking about, just weld a steel to a friction drive plate works a treat

will that work without locking the clutch off? will it not just spin it round?
Yes it will spin, yes it will work. When you put it back on you will need some kind of holder.

can drill a hole trough some plates and pin it with a nail or two do it with them in the basket so they line up

Make sure you get the piston at TDC on the comp[ stroke before taking the clutch drum off as if there is tension from the valve springs on the cam chain; the intermediate gear will spin as you remove the clutch drum and you've lost your valve timing.

The valves are timed to the crank via the intermediate gear and the clutch drum as you can see from this pic.I lined up the marks before removing the clutch drum.

p.s. mine was finger tight so no worries :?

I made up a simple tool that I wouldn't have needed if I'd read the posts about the kickstarter coming out when you take off the clutch cover.
