Kickstart lever 'catch'

Just thought i'd show you all a little addition i made to my berg the other day. I remembered last time i was out riding the kickstart would occasionally open out and catch my leg, usually just as i come up to a corner, taking my concentration momentarily. So i made a little catch to hold the kickstart to the frame when not in use. I ummed and arred about the design as its close to the exhaust, needs to be simple and easy to use with gloves on. basically all i used was a bit of insulation tape, a small rubber strap i had off a ducati i owned (one of those used to tidy the wiring) and a small length of aluminium weld rod. Its really secure when clipped on and the rubber strap is quite tight which twists the catch and holds it on the kickstart. i havent ridden it yet with this catch so cant comment on its stability under hard riding but i have faith in it.
I realise this aint a massive mod but its just me trying to get my berg as user friendly as possible. hope you like

i use a long plastic stop and hollow out the contact point in the kickstart lever.

I whittled down (joe in JB bikes actually) a rubber bung and glued it into the hole that's in the casing. You have to pull the lever back a little and push it into place but thereafter it keeps well tucked away, even on a MX track.

Thanks for your versions guys, very interesting. i like the rubber bung idea ! taffys is hard to visualise however :(

well james' plastic 'buffer' is missing, well you can see the indent it used to make when it was there.

So yours has a bit of plastic that locates into a hole made at the base of the lever ... also a good 'un. why didnt i think of these :(

Taff, i've got a feeling something isnt quite right with mine then ...

i have compared it to my mates which is next to mine in my garagae atm and (using above photo as reference) his lever seems to force itself into that rubber bung, whereas mine is sloppy when it gets sprung back up that far.

I also noticed when mine is being rotated from top position to kick, there is a small 'notch' where i feel it should grab the engine to turn (my mates does engage at this point), whereas mine carries on rotating to the next tooth for example. hmmmm
I hope i explained that well enough for you to understand ... !
 
I had a similar sloppy kickstart on my 03 501 that ocassionally used to find its way out to my leg at the worst possible time after my original little rubber came adrift ,not being able to buy the part,which presumably would be an exact fit ,I wad punched a peice of insertion rubber and glued it in also. This worked for a while but didn't last. In the end I bought a new kickstart and it no longer gives me trouble as the root of the original problem was that the Knuckle joint in the kickstart was just plain worn out. I wont have that problem next week when I take delivery of my new 570 but !!. I disconnected my decomp on the cam,which is just eliminateing some confusion when winding up to TDC -also helps to prevent that annoying little oil leak that can occur where the decomp connects on the side of the rocker cover.

the kickstart should bang back up and hit an internal plate that brings it to a halt - that should never change.

i'm using the 4 gal clarke tank on my 02 650and since the tank was designed for the later model that use the shorter kickstarter, my lever cannot fold fully under the tank. being the cheepo that i am, i just took it apart and fitted a healthy o-ring over the stub, greased it and refitted the top. it now rests against the bottom of the tank on a square of hd innertube glued to keep it from wearing the tank. doesn't pop out unless i want it to.
 
hey as u speak of Kickstart lever's i have to ask if any1 knows what steel kick fits on husaberg
as the aluminum kick ware's at the foot pin
found a old husaberg on a sell site that had a steel kick but the owner didn't know what bike it was from

can any1 tell me what bike the kick on the img below belongs too ?
