Second time now but at 400 engine hours and 10,000 miles on the clock should I complain?

First time was at 176 engine hours and 4600 miles. Bike was running great but I noticed a drastic increase of little silver hairs on the magnetic drain plug. Some additional investigation found the rollers bearings on the rocker arms had gone kaput. The rolling action was rough/bad. Two new rocker arms later all was well.

Now at 400 engine hours and 10,000 miles it's deja-vu all over again except this time it's only the intake rocker arm roller bearings that went bad. Exhaust roller feels fine. Easy fix, and 'only' a $100 part, this time.

Definitely replacing the intake rocker arm. Kind of debating whether to also replace the exhaust rocker arm as a preventative measure. Photo from 03 bike used for illustration.

Yes it should be possible to replace just the roller bearings but need the right tools and skills to press out the old bits and correctly press in the new stuff.

Ok!

Morning.
Easy to change the bearings.
If you wasen`t so far away i`ll would have done that for you for a beer or two (after the job) ;-)

Hi Jampe,

Yes you can get the bearings separate to having to buy the complete arm assembly, but you have order them from pre 2004, anything after this and you have to buy the complete arm.
The pins do press out easily.

Sparks.

RE: Re: Bearings?

if replacing just the bearings: try to put a file across the two inside faces of the rocker arm. you don't want any grooves to catch the needles and twist them otherwise you'll be back here again!

RE: Re: Bearings?

Easy to replace the bearings and a lot cheaper.
I found that the pins were soft enough on the ends so a few centre punchs near to outer edge would ensure that they would not work their way out.
I see the picture in the doc shows the rocker arm punched, better to punch the pin , your not going to close up the arm on the rollers that way.
My arms were not bushed as the ones in your photo show interestingly.
KTM 59036061090 around $30 US each
Fitted some to my fs650e 05 recently after 100hrs 5300km.

Cheers spanner.
