Water in oil

I noticed yesterday when I started the bike that oil was really foamy in the sight glass. I drained the oil and sure enough there is water in the oil. I know I read on here somewhere that there is a "usual suspect" gasket or seal that might be the cause. I searched and can't find the thread. What should I check?

if you've just rebuilt the engine you can get post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). typical signs are that you feel guilt, it's "all my fault", "why me!" etc. however it is not always a sign that you F.U.!!!

seriously though, runn the bike and check that the coolant has settled. if after another oil change you find nowt then it was infact a figment of your imagination!

Did you have the side cover off recently? It's possible that the gasket from the side cover is on top of the waterpump O ring, allowing water to get into the oil.
 
I just got around to taking the side cover off. I have a new water pump seal. Do I just pull the old one out and push the new one in or is there a special technique to replacing it? Also, is the water pump o-ring that goes between the side cover and the motor (item #65 on the parts diagram) supposed to be round or slightly flat?

it's meant to be round. certain barings have a sharp rather than chamfered inside diameter edge and as you slip the cover on they act as a bacon slicer. new 'O' ring required methinks.

i just press the new oil seal in the cover. i always pull the cover for total 100% satisfaction in the result. someone put me onto the metal-backed oil seals and i bloody HATE them. 100% rubber for me.

probably the same company can supply either. you can save that seal for the end of the crank. they usually keep a choice of the 2. remember - this is my personal preference. if you get iut in ok then it's me isn't it!!!

How do you get the old one out? I can't press it out because of the bearing on the other side of the cover. The rubber came off without much effort at all. It has started to disintegrate so I'm pretty certain that is where the leak is.

you could try a flat bladed screwdriver and get it to pivot on something placed underneath it about 1/2" from the end as a pivot point.

Are you talking about the water pump seal or oil seal? If you're talking about the WP seal, I use a flat blade screwdriver as a "punch" and tap it out.

this is starting to grate....

ok, it's the oil seal that's in the w/p housing. #60 yes!

you can't whack! a screwdriver in it as there is a bearing behind. so i get the screwdriver just under the lip and hook it out.
