was in the middle of changing the waterpump seal on my 02 650 (early 02) and when comparing what the parts book says against what i have i am confused. i have a seal that is the same o.d. as the waterpump bearing and the id of the bearing inner race between the waterpump seal and the bearing. the parts book does not show it.(surprise, surprise)
see pic
do all these bikes have this?

we have a 02fx650 as well in the shop and it is the same as your pic.
The new waterpump bearing comes with a seal assembled as onewith the bearing and as far as I know the seal is not available separetly.

Do any of you fellas have any tips on removing and reinstalling this seal /bearing? I will be doing this project soon and would appreciate your advice.

The bearing is fairly easy to remove. I warmed the case up with a heat gun, placed the case on a butcher block top bench and then tapped it out using a drift and hammer placed on the bearing inner race. To install, warm the case up a bit, place the bearing in the freezer if you like and then tap the bearing in using a socket that fits over the outer race. Do not tap on the inner race as you will damage the bearing. Before you remove the old bearing examine the seated position so that you will know when it is fully seated and to stop hammering.

A master heat gun is a good investment for your work area.

your seal and bearing came as a complete part as eric's picture shows. just flick that big ol seal out and start again. you may want to make sure that the trench for leaking water or oil can make it out the weep hole. up to you but some folk don't want to see the problem!

that's what i was guessing, but with some of the parts list errors, ya never know. should the bearing be a tight fit in the case or on the shaft?

in the sidecover, that way the cover is easy to remove and thus why we have an @O' ring on the shaft.
