From what I know the frames are quite similar between the 2000 & '02. The engines are however completely different. The 2000 was the last of the older "traditional" engine. The design had evolved over 10+ years and by 2000 was pretty damn good. Remember that with the older engines you had the e-start model with a counterbalancer shaft and electric starter driving onto it. The pic you show is the non-e-start model with no balancer shaft and so can never be fitted with a starter. I've only ridden one but it would vibrate your teeth out!

The 2002 was only one iteration after the major engine redesign of 2001 where they changed how the cylider is held in the engine cases and fitted a counterbalancer (that was quite different to the old one) to all the models, whether they have e-start or not. I understand that they have a bit of trouble with the rockers but can be updated with later model ones. Have heard lots of stories of failed main and counterbalancer bearings but I would like to think this really depends on how hard you drive them. If it is the FE650E electric start model the starters are notorious for not having the balls to start the engine reliably - you still have to kick them as well, particularly on the big 650. It is probably a few kilos lighter than the 2000. It looks to have a better electrical system - ie turn indicators.

In my opinion if the 600 was a FE600E I'd go for it. I wish my bike was one! Being only the FE600, probably go the 2002 FE650 if you can afford it. It really comes down to what you want to use it for!
