"Can you mount the trials with Michelin Bib Mousse?"

vbenedic

That is a good question. I suppose that you could, but I normally run the trials tires at a lot lower pressure than the 14psi that tuts did and I suspect that the Mousse would be a bit too inflexible though it would give good protection against flats. When I recuperate and get back in the saddle I am going to run a trails tire with Tire Balls because they can be adjusted for pressure. I do not know how low of a pressure they can be adjusted to , but I plan to find out. http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGknBNkHxHC ... cycle.html

i don't use mousses so i'm not 100% BUT; i heard that a mousse is the equivelant to 10PSI or so. so perfic for a trials tyre. just need to check the size. you need the smallest 18" they do.

Michelin says a mousse is equivalent to 13 psi. As they are used, the foam breaks down, and the "psi" lessens.

dez, rode with some people using trials with tire balls the other day. they use about 8 psi.
fwiw, tuts, one of them had a trials on the front (atk250) and said it worked fine, but allowed the bike prolly didn't make enough power to get him in trouble on turns.

thing is, there is no benefit to a trials front, can't be can there?

happy new year tuts! i got you down for coming over in 2009 mate! bring the wife and we'll stick her on the train to paris! bring yo'll buddy dez widgya!

It seems more and more pro's are running front and rear trials tires for the EnduroX. I guess they must work, not sure if I want to find out just yet.

Thanks for the info Ned., That reinforces my yearning to try the tire balls.
And thanks to you too Taffy for the invite. I agree that there is no apparent advantage to a front trials tire, but then I have never used one and for many years I thought that a rear trials tire would be useless too. An Fe650 with trials tires front and rear would be an odd sight, eh? I suspect that a KTM 300 Christini might work with that set up.

Tuts and Dezduster have convinced me to get a set of trial tires. They are on order and should be here in a week or so. I would like to mount them with tire balls since I am paranoid about someone calling search and rescue if I get a flat 10 to 20 miles or so from the truck. Our local motorcycle tire shop told me that trials tires do not work with tire balls - something about them becoming unseated because of softer sidewalls. I was told that the trials tire that shop was unable to successfully mount with tire balls was the Michelin. Is this mounting problem fact or an urban legend? Are there some brands of tires that work with tire balls and others that do not work with them? Ned37, do you know what type of trials tire was ran with the tire balls? Thanks for your insight on these vexing issues.

vp, they are running mitas trials tires, so i have no way to verify the story on tireballs with a michilin.

Been running the X11 now for about 10 months. The wear and traction is fantastic. With that being said, I have had 2 pinch flats in the last 3 rides. After riding a total of 15 miles in the last 3 rides on a flat and DNF'ing a race, the trials tire experiment is over for me. If tire balls work in an X11 I may revisit it, but having $400 invested in a rear tire is just too much $$ for me right now. It's back to the M11's for now.

For slow technical stuff the tire was unbelievable. For deep and high speed sand the tire did not work that well for me. Mixed feeelings for sure.

The tire is probably at 80% after 25 hours of riding.

Hey Ned, Do you still have that Dunlop on the Blackberg? It was brand new when I brought it to you except for chuck'n a couple of knobs.

Some time ago I gave an IRC trials tire a test for several rides on my '04 KTM 525 (540) EXC. For trail riding it was fantastic, providing superb traction in all conditions, however in higher speed situations it was not as rosey. Two rim pinch flats in one day even running at 13psi. Center knobs literally disintegrating after a couple of higher speed rides.

I just tried the IRC trial tires. What an improvement. The traction is better and it is much easier to steer.

The shop that put the tires on said tire balls would not work. So it looks like I am back to tubes.
