Which reminds me of an interview of a race team manager at the Bathurst 1000 car race some years ago who commented that the car had to be retired because of an incurable electrical problem. When pursued, he admitted that the rod through the block had knocked the alternator off its mount creating the problem!!!!

Almost as nasty as a "tree" through your radiator !!!! Causing massive dehydration of machine and man !!!! I think I sweated about 3 litres pushing my "very lite" berg back to the pits !!!!

piston skirt cracked and broke off , the piston then turns upside down in the cylinder .

you all know the rest !!
 
Pardon my ignorance, but what causes something like that?
3 grand past redline?
Or just critical flaw?
 
according to the author of this thread he was cruising on the highway for some 50km, doing around 100 kph. Then it went boom.

it didn't used to be unusual for the piston crown to fly off on other bikes like the old dukes but they have cured that i thought in recent years. the speed is irrelevant BB: it's the revs...
