Hi,

I'm looking at a 550 berg that was built in 09/04. The owner claims it was sold to him as an 05 model. How can I tell if it's an 04 or 05 model?

If it's an 04, is there anything I should be wary of? I have the VIN number if that helps.

Cheers

I have an '05 550 and mine also has /04 build date. If he has the original user manual you will see that it has'05 right across the front cover. The '05 also has a distinct sticker kit.See: http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/husabe ... e_2005.php
Alot of manufacturers build them the year before they release them. Here in Aus you will notice the 2008 models will come out around August/September

Thanks for the info. It sure looks like an 05. See attached pic. Anything I should look out for on this model?

find your vin number count in 10 digits in from the beginning and that should be a 5 if your bike is a 05 or if there is a 4 then it is a 04 ok

Congrats! Hey I saw that bike while shopping for my 05 FE recently, I knew that photo immediately. Where in Melb are u and where do you ride? I'm in Mt Waverley and ride mostly Warburton area, also Mansfield area.

Hi Nutt,

I'm in Edna Everidge country, Moonee Ponds.

Have done most of my dirt riding in the Vic Alps. Mainly big 4 to 8 day, ride-in, ride-out loops between 400-1000kms on big thumpers. I've travelled around most of Australia offroad on GS bemmers, and recently moved down to a KTM 640 (which got nicked). Anyway, I've really looking forward to getting back into hard-core dirt riding and getting the old skill working.

Maybe we could hook up for a ride?

Cheers

The outward appearance is 05 except the fender and headlamp mask have been changed from yellow to blue. The licence plate holder has been altered or changed to an aftermarket unit or a 06 or 07 one.

Wrapped in Kick starter. The 04's didn't have that. And, the 05's have the thermostat in the lower water pump line.

the first number of your engine no also depicts the year model eg 781***** is an 07 model yours should be 581***** unless the engine has been changed.
KTM are the same.

Hi,

All the Australian 05 bergs I've seen have blue front guard and mask, see NUTT's bike

The shorty numberplate holder is from a KTM.

Cheers

I changed my front plastics to blue, they were yellow so I'd believe that yellow front was stock.

Yeah I'd be keen to hook up for a ride. I'll post details when there's a trip coming up in advance

Out of interest, I purchased an 05 upgrade kit for my 04 back when the new model arrived. It consisted of thermostat/housing and pipes, kickstarter lever, new bend header pipe (04 ones hit the tyre when fork compressed), 05 graphics and blue gripper seat cover.
Hey NUTT, those ringmaster graphics are slick!! Good job.
