before I spend big bucks on one I'd like to know if anyone has fitted one before and how much difference it maid.

I just got a Scott bolt on kit for my mine. Did not try it yet but was highly recommended by all my friends who have Husabergs. For them it was a safety reason more than anything else.
 
ferret, This is a Scott's stabilizer. Really helps in deep sand, deep sand ruts, cross ruts ,front wheel deflection rocks, roots hell it helps everywhere. Taffy will tell you that a correctly tuned suspension eliminates the need for one. I am still tring to get to that state of tune, if and when I accomplish that I will still run this stabilizer.
In fact I will soon buy the Sub-mount for mine. This allows you to raise the forks in the triple-clamps and raises your bars 1 " or 1 1/2 " depending which riser you choose.

they look pretty schmick.

my problem atm is when I hit a hole (more than 6 inches deep) in the top of 3rd say 80 - 90km/h the hangers get a good wobble up then centre again and all is good. On the road she doesnt wobble til bout 120 - 140 km/h but I'm not worried about that one it's more the fast impact wobbles that make me crap my pants.

When I was doing downhill MTB racing I put some roadbike bar weights on the hangers to eliminate this problem but on a pushy that weighs 20kg's and 9 inches of suspension travell at both ends it didn't take much to keep it straight.

I might try some on the berg before shelling out big bucks.

How does one setup up the suspension properly on the front. There are heaps of guides for the rear but I'm stumped where to start on the front.
 
got one in the shed.

had it fitted to the last 3 bikes i had, have not found the need to fit it two the berg.

would be of most benefit if you regular ride high speed stuff.
 
Real helpful in the fast desert. I find in the trees I have it turned way down if not off. The faster and more cobbley it is the more I rely on it. Mainly stope the deflection in high speed stuff. Completely elimanates head shake in deep sand with lots of tracks, if you know what I mean
Now on a CR500 Or KX500 I would see Jesus quite often without one :lol:
Not smart enough to set my suspension up properly I guess

I look at it now kinda of like the AMerican Express card.....Dont leave home without it

if you're riding 80-90 km/h offroad, then a steering damper can be helpful in some situations. i have one on my 250sx that i've been using for dezert racing, but i don't have one on my fe550. for me they are only useful when pushing the limits in the dez. at my normal trailriding pace (which is still reasonably brisk) i don't find it makes a difference, but i'm not really a high speed junkie. i get my thrills righting tighter more technical stuff as fast as i can.
 
I have one on the 650, I need it for the real high speed stuff, also works great for the rocky trails we have here in Az.

they just look better than what I can get here so if the rear looked good too I might source a kit.
 
I have thought about a steering damper to help on rocks (some of the hills round here look like they have been sprinkled with giant sugarcubes).
I have to say I have had a head shake at speed on the road but when I checked out the front end the forks were twisted in the clamps after hiting rocks.
Once re-aligned the head shake goes. Managed to top 100mph on the clock without so much as a shimy from the front.

I wonder wether a big hit from a rock with a damper on isn`t going to transfer some stress elswere?

My '96 FE 400 has a WER model, mounted low. It is real nice in the woods, not slapping easy when hitting rocks or logs...I actually have avoided a few crashes....

markt did you need to get a bracket welded or is that a factory mount for sumthin else?
 
i put a scotts damper on my fe400 awhile ago and told myself after spending the money that it was worth the investment. now, granted, i'm old, fat, and slow (getting slower all the time), but when i put it on my fe400e, and would switch back and forth riding the 400e with and 400 without, i can't say i miss it. there are times when it is an advantage, but those times are when berserking thru washes full of rocks, and i try to avoid those nowadays. i ride the same rocky, twisty trails on both bikes and can go faster on the 400 because its lighter and reacts better. it seems the damping settings i use tend to be heavier than what i probably need, but i use them so i'll know the damper is working, and that causes the steering to be less responsive than the nondamped bike. at this point, i'd agree with those that say if your suspension is right, and you don't do baja, you don't need one.

I put one on my 2001, set it to a very light setting and found it made a huge difference! Prior to the damper I was constantly making tiny line corrections, which over the course of a days riding, added to the fatigue. The other bump steer elimination benefits are also well documented. Mine is an OHLINS (they manufacture SCOTTS)

WER low-mount install

The bike already had the damper on it when I purchased it. It was easy to see that the bracket was welded on...lightly as not much holding force is needed. The low mounted installation also required some cutting on the number plate....otherwise the installation is sano.
